Thanks Maryl. The last earthquakes were all the way up in Hokkaido, the northern island. I am down in Yokohama, where all was calm. Except of course that we have tremblors every couple of weeks, but these just shake the house a little, nothing breaking.

This was ancient when I was a child, which makes doubly ancient now. For those who -amazingly- have never heard it, and are tired of guessing, the answer is hidden here: when its ajar. Note that James and Maryl's replies are actually hints, though Speaker moved in to obfuscate James' some.

| I think there are many, many people who've never heard of it. Probably over 80% of the world population.

I liked visitor's line of thought. Along the same lines you could say: When it is the test. Explanation hidden: (de test) (Adore <-> Detest). Not the classic answer, but it does have a nice balance.

| My apologies. Of course it is highly unlikely that someone who does not speak English will have heard of it. And for those of you who speak English as a second language, puns are something to be avoided until a certain familiarity is reached. On the other hand, it is amazing to me that any native English speaking adult should have somehow passed through childhood blissfully unexposed to this horrid pun! (I know that the official name for this smiley is "lips sealed", but he looks to me as if he is about to vomit!)

| When I looked at the solution, I rembered encountering it at school, but I not in which year, probably second or third (wrt English). However, the context was different I think, so it didn't surface at once. Or maybe I only repressed it. Quote:(I know that the official name for this smiley is "lips sealed", but he looks to me as if he is about to vomit!) |
| Up to now, I've avoided being in a position to judge this statement - neither have I looked someone straight in the face who's about to vomit, nor have I vomited into a mirror. I'm sure there are some adequately animated smilies out there!

I don't get it Icarus; what's so horrid about a pun, a pun after all serves a purpose-no? Sometimes the little things help.

I did not say that all puns were horrid. But this one is punishing.
