what unusual natural phenomen is capable of speaking in any language? Before Mt. Everest was discovered what was the highest mountain on earth? Forward i am heavy, backward i am not. what am i? How many bricks does it take to complete a house made of brick? How many times can you subtract the number 5 from 25? If you have it, you want to share it, if you share it, you don't have it. what is it? The more you have it, the less you see, what is it? The more you take, the more you leave behind, what are they? what can go up a chimney down, but can't go down a chimney up? could you please submit answers at all_that_shimmers@lycos.com //Moved from Easy Forum by Icarus

Quote:what unusual natural phenomen is capable of speaking in any language? |
| I've yet to see a natural phenomenon which can speak ASL, but other than that, I think I know. And as a hint, the answers for the brick house one and the 25-5 one are both based on the same concept.

The one which had me going for the longest was "The more you take, the more you leave behind". I came up with some non-satisfying but possibly correct answers, until I found what I believe the be the "right" answer (or at least one the puzzler should have thought of). The "right" answer stinks. Thanks for the hint Chronos! I would also like to point out that if you look at the question that way, there are two possible answers. It depends on the way the house is built. I suppose there's also the pathalogical case of the zero square-foot house made of zero bricks. Hmm...

How many times can you subtract 5 from 25? At first I thought: 'So, they think they're gonna get me! Obviously, it's not 5, since nowhere it is said that we must remain in the positive integers. So the answer is an infinite number of times! Gosh, I'm so smart!' But then I thought, 'Hey! Once you subtract 5, you're left with 20, which is no longer 25! So the answer is: only once. Gosh, I'm REALLY smart!' I think this was the intended answer, if it has to do with the brick thing. But then something occurred to me: what keeps you from doing the 25-5=20 operation over and over? I think the number of times you can subtract 5 from 25 is only limited by your lifespan, and the time you devote to such a (noble?) activity. If the human race got together in a collective effort to subtract 5 from 25, we could conceivably do it jillions of times! So let's get going! Pass this message on to your friends!

You followed my exact train of thought on that one, Pietro! (that should scare you). I definitely agree with you. But I don't see how the 25-5 one relates to brick house. I mean, I suppose if you lay one brick, you have a complete brick house, for like an ant who lives inside the pores in the brick. Since that is ridiculous, I have no idea how brick house relates to 25-5, whichever solution is right. Now also, I'd have to say that Mt. Everest has always been the highest mountain, even before it was discovered. But I guess that was obvious. I really like the forward heavy one, it was easy but clever. A few of the rest I'm still working on.

How many bricks does it take to COMPLETE a brick house? Just one... regardless of how many bricks it took to build it. The forward-backward one I still haven't got! And the answer to "the more you take, the more you leave behind"? Is it "a shower"?

My answer to "the more you take..." is not "a shower". I'm still stuck with the chimney thing, but that could be a language problem. At least I hope so. on Sep 25th, 2002, 6:29am, Brett Danaher wrote:Now also, I'd have to say that Mt. Everest has always been the highest mountain, even before it was discovered. | Well, to me it's obvious that Chomolungma (Mt. Everest) hasn't always been the highest mountain, as the Himalayas are only about 600 000 years old.

Highlight: The chimney thing...that's an umbrella. When the umbrella is up, it's spread out and won't fit into most chimneys, going either up or down. When it's down, it's thin, and it can go through the chimney.

Thanks, Jeremiah. I'm sure I wouldn't have thought about that unless I'd come across the terms "up" and "down" in connection with this thing. And that may well have taken a while.

The answer to "the more you take, the more you leave behind" ... it can be almost anything! It could be a walk (you leave the road behind when you take a walk), or a dump! And the "forward-backward, heavy-not heavy" thing? Is it the last wagon in a train? Is it carrying something up a slope? Is it the wind? Is it the reading on an analog scale? You know, the little arrow that indicates the weight of something? Aaaaarrrrghhhh!!!

I don't know whether this is old hat, but speaking of Chinese: How do you call a Chinese woman who has only one leg?

That's strange, I've already read that episode, Icarus, but I didn't remember it, despite the obvious connection. on Sep 25th, 2003, 4:56pm, Ouroboros wrote:I'm curious, how much more needs to be added to the leg so that the term woman becomes applicable? |
