The little boxes are appostrophes and esses. (Let 19 in the English language). The fs is also a ghost that doesn't appear in the original. My OS is Japanese, so this happens. Also, appostrophes and esses on some English sites appear as Kanji in my browser. In Japan we call this "moji bake" (mow gee bah kay). I have been stumped when trying to describe this in English, is there a standard term for this among computer afficianado's (afficianadii)?

Yes, you are right. The second part refers to the latin translation of the thread's title, with a little nuance to the English term for the source of all of our petroleum products.
