I believe we will eventually develop an AI that is better at developing AIs than humans are, at which point we'll get something like an exponential acceleration of progress in AI development, but only until a new limiting factor dominates - at present, the main limiting factor on AI development is human ingenuity, but it's easy to think of other possible limits... Whether this counts as the Singularity, or just another giant leap for mankind...

I agree with rmsgrey. I expect that one severe limiting factor will be that making a smarter AI gets progressive harder. The low-hanging fruits for increasing problem-solving ability (or whatever you take as a measure of intelligence) will be the first to be plucked. So while we may make an AI that is smarter than us, it will face a more difficult problem in making an even smarter AI. Therefore I wouldn't expect an intelligence explosion with a run-away feedback loop.

How will we know when we've built a sentient computer?

It will be perfect when we can turns our body into immortal machines to live forever I personally think that must be soon or later but that will happen. Immortality must be great, watching the technology improval for unlimited time....

Unless we solve problems like overpopulation and the destruction of our environment, living indefinitely may not be all it's cracked up to be.

Yeah I really think it will be great. The only problem is there's not enough space on Earth, but I think when We have technological singularity we can travel the universe. Or we can build a dyson sphere around the sun and upload our minds to the great computer and live like virtual beings

| That still doesn't solve the problem of finite resources - true immortality combined with a non-zero birthrate means any finite volume will be filled in a finite time. Meanwhile, even with a zero birthrate, there's still the end of the universe to contend with...

Oh, well, by the time THAT happens, we'll have figured out how to fix that too .

Correctly spotted. population, basic necessities must be available to all the humans, to let them free and think beyond the survival. on Sep 20th, 2011, 12:44pm, towr wrote:Unless we solve problems like overpopulation and the destruction of our environment, living indefinitely may not be all it's cracked up to be. |

A robot can only do what we program it do though. It can't really just do anything and everything like a human could decide to do.

| Sure it can, if we program it to. You just said so. Besides, ever heard of machine learning? Evolutionary algorithms? Neural networks? There are already lots of robots that can do things they were not explicitly programmed to do, but which they've learned.

I think so this can be can be happen. I have seen a movie which represent the same concept that you are talking about. I forgot it's name. Science is progressing day by day. Let's see what more and advanced things will be discoverer.

| You know what else humans make? More humans. Just because we make something, it doesn't mean we understand its capabilities; still less that it has precisely the capabilities we designed into it. Even if that was true, that wouldn't be a barrier to robots acting like humans - it would just mean that we'd have to design them to do it...
