A Raise 2: Turnkey’s Apprentice

A turnkey has a riddle for his new young apprentice. In the store he places three different keys on the desk and asks him: “Which key opens the door to the store? It is tradition that there can be two keys to the store, no more. You haven't the right to try to close/open the door with two of these keys on the desk. If you think that the riddle is too hard, despair not forwhy I’ll give you a hint: Mi casa es su casa. If you answer correctly, the spare key is yours and also a raise.”

So, apparently, one of the keys is equal to his own house key, so he only has to try one of the other two keys.

Hey that's a nice try/solution! It takes more time to accomplish it, running to the house and all and then returning back to the store, but it is interesting. Not the intended answer which, in a sense, is somewhat cast in the same mold, and takes a lot less time (unless the house was near) and there is no need to leave the store at all.

I'd assume the apprentice has his own copy of the house key with him to compare it to, so I don't see why he'd need to run home.

Though I appreciate your enthusiasm, enough with the house key already. One key unlocks the door of the store while the other two are a mystery, that is to say, it is irrelevant which doors they unlock.

Sounds like a bad hint then, if their house has nothing to do with it.

Something else has to do with it. Something that is not far away. Just follow where's smoke there's fire logic. Sorry about the earlier rather bad hint.

Use what is at disposal and nearby. What else could you do?

About the spare key. The turnkey lost it down the drain. Yep. This was a hint. In a sense, this riddle is a temporal paradox.

The apprentice did something "else" with the keys. What, exactly?

The answer: He made a duplicate key/keys. The spare key to the store was still to be made, forwhy he lost the previous one down the drain. Temporal paradox, anyone?
