What happened in Boston?

The speculation behind this post may be out of date very soon. The police are hunting two brothers, and the older brother was killed. After the death of the older brother, the police has considerable difficulties finding the younger brother. What happened? The younger brother is 19, the older 26. Is it not probable that the older was the dominant partner in the scenario leading to the bombing? If so, after the death of the dominant brother, is it not reasonable to assume that the logic or rationale of the younger brother now have changed with a new modus operandi. He may simply want to leave the area. He may want to disappear rather than continue the bombing or fighting. With a little help or luck he may be further (or far far) away with a modified appearance.

Now we can move this post to the heading "what could have happened" given a number of assumptions about the initial state and available information.
