Childs arrived at an American Antarctic research station two weeks ago. Being communicative, he got to know well the station crew in a few days. But he fell hitting his head and is now suffering from, in doctor’s opinion, temporary amnesia. He only recalls common knowledge, the names of people, and the code for his locker. So he enters the locker room and there’s Bennings at his locker, 5 meters distant from Childs’. The lockers are lined up against one wall and each has the number interface with numbers 1 through 9. He opens the locker but his belongings inside don’t invoke additional memory. He closes it and says to Bennings, who’s still at his, that he’ll go to bed early. The next day he finds his locker opened and his belongings thrown about on the floor. He tells to the crew about it and asks each of them what they were doing at the time. Windows - I listened to the music in my quarters, before turning in. I’d put my money on Garry because you had a quarrel with him. Bennings - I’m the station's dog-handler. I vaccinated the dogs. If I had to guess I’d say that Giles wanted to get back at you because you said to him that he was worthless. Copper – I was in the underground generator room. Later I played cards. I recall seeing Davis near the locker room. You and he got plastered one night. Maybe you told him the code under the influence of alcohol. But he was your friend so I can’t think of a reason why would he do it. MacReady – I’m the helicopter pilot. I was flying the helicopter. Maybe you should keep an eye on Windows. He is very persistent and whiz kid in math and programming. If anybody could break your locker’s code, it’s him. But he always seemed to like you, so I can’t think of a motive. Giles - I was playing chess on a computer. I did see an opened locker and your belongings on the floor, so I entered your room to tell you about it. But you were asleep and you hit your head recently so I didn’t want to wake you. Garry – What was I doing? I'm the station commander. I played cards with Blair and Cooper. Now that I think of it, Cooper did leave the table for 15 minutes, but he said that he had to go to the bathroom. – When did you go to bed? – Late at night. Dr. Blair – I was doing an autopsy of the cadaver we found in the snow. Later I joined Cooper and Garry to play some cards. I think that MacReady could be responsible. In my opinion, he exhibited some symptoms of cabin fever. That‘s why he often flies his damn helicopter, even at pretty bad weather. Davis - I talked over radio. I went to bed early. How you’re doing there buddy? – Well, for one thing, I can’t remember us being buddies. – We still are, for my part. – Copper said that he saw you near the locker room. – Indeed. I took the picture of my girlfriend from the locker and taped it in my quarters. You know, Bennings could be the culprit. You are a cat person and you told him to keep his mutts away from you. You told me he gave you the evil eye because of it. After receiving above answers, Childs had a prime suspect. Who was it?

Just an idea. Davis was after Childs' girlfriend. He stole the picture to make Childs believe she is Davis' and stay away from her.

Child asks each of them what they were doing at the time. Cooper and Blair said they played cards....but later. At the time, only Garry says he was playing. Garry did it.

Giles. i) He had no alibi. ii) He was playing chess on his computer. So it's quite possible that he is a computer whiz and good at numbers. iii) If he saw Childs's locker open and his belongings on the ground, why didn't he put them back in? Grimbal's idea is also nice but we must take into consideration the fact that Childs does not remember having a girlfriend. So given his state of mind, he cannot suspect Davis based on that.

Bennings At the moment, he was in the locker room, next to Childs, so he couldn't be vaccinating the dogs. Unless by "at the moment" you mean throughout the rest of the night. If so, then Cooper, because he doesn't mention his leaving of the room for fifteen minutes.

I think that it would be best for all of us if I comment in this thread only if someone provides the correct answer.

meh. It was Childs. He couldn't remember doing it. In falling, he died. His body was possessed by the dormant spirit of a Shoggoth called Cthulhu, explaining why he can't 'remember' any serious details- He (Cthulhu) never knew them.

It could be anything. He's undercover, and has forgotten the cover story. They're all dead. This is the 7th circle of Hell. He's a possum having particularly vivid dreams.

Not bad. The intended answer is that he was sleepwalking. on Oct 4th, 2010, 7:49pm, Noke Lieu wrote:meh. It was Childs. He couldn't remember doing it. |
| Noke wins.
