Grandpa Joe, Grandson Bill
« on: Jul 24th, 2009, 11:56am »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

Grandpa Joe was sitting on his porch talking to his grandson Bill. Grandpa Joe always like to tell stories, so even at the ripe old age of 5 Bill was never too quick to trust anything that Grandpa had to say.

"I was 72 on my last birthday and I'll be 74 on my next birthday!" Grandpa Joe exclaimed.

Incredulous, Bill ran inside to tattle to Grandma. But Grandma stood up for Grandpa, telling Bill that
Grandpa Joe was right.

How could Grandpa be telling the truth?

Simple answer of your riddle which emphases to get 74 next year

Let say Grandpa's birthday is on 3rd April and the statement passed is on 4th April. So day before yesterday (1st April) he was 72 and he is currently 73 and next year the same day he will be 74

But there is another catch which can prove following as well.

(With respect to BenVitale I am re phrasing the riddle by increasing one level of difficulty Smiley )

Grandpa said..."I was 72 on my last birthday and I'll be 75 on my next birthday!"

If it were 76 or 80, or even 84, I could see how, but I don't know about 75.

I see 76 or 80, how would you get 84?

It can only happen thrice every 400 years; 2000 was a leap year, but 1900 wasn't, nor will 2100.

Grandpa Joe is 74, but his birthday is on a leap day. Two leap years accumulated after his 72nd birthday, so he never had a 73rd and 74th birthday.

But leap years are every four years, not every three. If he had a 72nd birthday, then the next three, including the 75th, aren't on the calendar.

Alternate answer: his last birthday was his 73rd. However, he didn't turn 73 until the time of day he was born. So he was both 72 and 73 on his last birthday.
