Jabba the Hutt

Jabba the Hutt is a loan shark and he sends his goons after you, as you owe him money for some time now. They find you and bring you to Jabba, who gives you two options. First option is to be thrown in the aquarium, where’s the great white shark. The 2nd option is on a simulated reality called holodeck, all of which security measures have been removed. There you’ll be crushed by two opposite walls, acting like hydraulic press. You may handle the details by choosing room’s size, because even though I’m cruel, I’m not that cruel. But then he says that he still prefers some suspense, thus the strong shield will be surrounding you, which is vulnerable to the above walls only. Don’t worry. The shield cannot endure for long the above walls, so it’ll all be over before you know it. There will be miniature cameras all over the ceiling, so Jabba doesn’t miss a thing. And if you miraculously survive either option, you may go and the debt will be forgotten. Which option would you choose?

I choose the room, and as I get to manipulate a few details of the room, I would have a doorway in each wall and make sure they line up with one another. Thus, surviving the crushing walls and having my debt forgotten.

Ice said: "thus the strong shield will be surrounding you, which is vulnerable to the above walls only" That sentence is the key ("above walls only" referring to the two walls closing in but not the other fixed walls). A ------- | / | C | / | D | / | ------- B Choose the size of the room similar to above. Walls C and D are the ones that close in. Make the distance between A and B about 75% of your height. You are on the floor your head pointing to corner AD and your feet to corner BC. The shield will not resist the crushing wall C and D but is strong enough to break walls A and B from the force being applied by C and D. Once either A or B is breached, just crawl right out.

| Intriguing. I hadn’t that in mind though. I suppose that if there’s an alternative answer, this one just might do.

This is an addition to the riddle. Mind you, when a particular program of this holodeck is activated, it can run no more than half an hour. Then it shuts down for some time before you can use holodeck again. Btw, the speed of the moving walls is very fast. What happened to simpler times?

Quotes: hidden: | "Many attacks occur in waters with low visibility, or other situations in which the shark's senses are impaired." In an aquarium, the water would be very clear, reducing the chance of an attack. And: "the great white shark's 'role as a menace is exaggerated; more people are killed in the U.S. each year by dogs than have been killed by great white sharks in the last 100 years.'" See? |

| While the danger of the Great White shark is often overstated, the Great White should not be taken for granted either. From the same Wikipedia article: "However some researchers have hypothesized that the reason the proportion of fatalities is low is not because sharks do not like human flesh, but because humans are often able to get out of the water after the shark's first bite. In the 1980s John McCosker noted that divers who dived solo and were attacked by great whites were generally at least partially consumed, while divers who followed the buddy system were normally pulled out of the water by their colleagues before the shark could finish its attack. Tricas and McCosker suggest that a standard attack modus operandi for great whites is to make an initial devastating attack on its prey, and then wait for the prey to weaken before going in to consume the wounded animal. A human's ability to get to land (or onto a boat) with the help of others is unusual for a great white's prey, and thus the attack is foiled. " "Biologist Douglas Long writes that the great white shark's "role as a menace is exaggerated; more people are killed in the U.S. each year by dogs than have been killed by great white sharks in the last 100 years."[21] However, such comments should be taken in context; interaction between humans and canines takes place far more regularly and in greater numbers than it does between humans and sharks."

| But its safety measures were removed. I dunno much about holodecks though. Who does? Jabba altered it so this time it’s for real. There are better riddles for sure. on Apr 2nd, 2008, 3:35pm, denis wrote:I choose the holodeck. In the middle of the simulation, utter the sentence: "Computer, end program" |

Make the room with a low cieling so you can destroy the camera, which short circuits the electricity in the holodeck?

Wear the shield and enter the aquarium. The shield is vulnerable only to the two walls and so the shark won't be able to break it. OR Simply, wear the shield and run away.

Just put Jabba in the holodeck and make it simulate yourself entering the holodeck and being crushed to death, pleading for forgiveness. Leave Jabba in there forever.

Jabba: So, what do you choose? Me: Well, first I would like to see a demo of the holodeck before I make my decision. Jabba agrees and puts one of his not-so-good goons in the holodeck with the shield around him. Soon the walls start moving, breaking the shield and crushing the man. But then Jabba realizes his mistake. The shield has been broken and thus the second option cannot be carried out. Jabba, being a man of princilple, leaves you.

The holodeck being only a simulation, what's the problem. Just enter the thing, watch the simulation of yourself being crushed to death, and when it says "game over", just leave. Uh, no. Before leaving, ask him to lend you more money.

Btw, physical law is present, but not in its entirety, as Jabba's holodeck is less advanced. Oh well.
