Scale of justice
« on: Mar 31st, 2008, 11:12am »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

You've died and God has put your soul on the scale of justice. It appears that this God isn't exactly a spitting image of any god you heard of back on Earth. He prefers goodness of the heart over sin though, but he has specific, strict rules, which have clear answers to most situations, yet not this one. The rules clearly state, that if the scale turns towards Heaven or Hell, that's where you'll go.

God weighs your good deeds on one end of the scale and sins on the other. But it just so happens, that scale shows exactly 50% of above deeds and 50% of sins. So in order to preserve the integrity of this holy system, God decides to ask you the question below.

If I decide to double your soul to preserve the holy system, one of you will go to Heaven and the other to Hell. Yes, there will be two of you, sort of like human twins, but identical in most respects, including memories of your past life. But if I decide to go through with it, before I create your double, I’ll give only to you the possibility to choose. In that, you may choose to go to Heaven or Hell, and your future double will go to the remaining place. So, what would you choose?

Hehehe... (evil grin) I will pretend I want to go to Hell to save my double.  My double will show his delight.  He is so naive.  God will see how good I am and how selfish the other is and send me to Heaven.  hehehehee...

Or decide that since you want to go to hell in the first place there is no use of him creating a double since you just volunteered Roll Eyes

Uh.... wait! ... Nooooooooo!

Anyway, if the question is asked before being doubled, there isn't really much to decide, is it?  Whatever you decide, part of your future goes to Heaven, the other part goes to Hell.

I would opt for hell and let my double go to heaven. This would increase the weight of my good deeds and the scale will turn towards heaven. Thus I will be sent to heaven without the need for creating my double. Wink

You: I want to save my double, so I guess I want to go to Hell.

God: Really?  Which master do you want to serve.  Me, or the Evil?

You: Uh ... You of course ...  But I sacrifice myself for the good of my double.

God: Hm... I'm not so happy about human sacrifice or suicide.

You: Yes, me too ... but it is for saving a fellow soul.

God: But that "fellow" soul is also yours.  This makes you a very selfish person.  You don't really fit with the people upstairs.  Take the stair down.

I'd choose to go back through time, couple of days before I die. Stock up on all the good deeds, then meet Him again. ( Though if I do go deeds because I want to go to Heaven, that would be selfish, which is a sin, balancing the scale yet again ) Hmm...

I refuse to choose, for to choose one way or another would have the same end result. Either choose the devil for me and heaven for my double, whereby I am voluntarily serving the devil, or choose heaven whereby I voluntarily send my double to eternal damnation which is selfish.

Therefore, I feel the best option is refusing to make the choice. Tell God that a failure of his system should not be left up to me to fix, that he should have to fix his own problem.

You: Hey god, here's $100 bill.

God: Bribing? Down the stairs you go!

Exactly what I though Gotit. After all, sacrifice is the greatest love, good deed and all.

It does sound like paradox, doesn’t it? But if you answer to God like gotit suggested, there’s no apparent reason to create the double, which is an optimal scenario. Of course, the decision belongs to God. Mind you, God said that the plausible double would be identical in most respects, so he probably wouldn’t recall anything regarding the above question. It would be sadistic if otherwise, because he would blame God forever in fiery lake for not asking him this question instead, or something like that. I’m a bit confused now as well. No need to overanalyze.  Roll Eyes

Btw, I threw this riddle in for the sake of debating a bit, as God is, after all, mysterious.
