Birthday gift

John is celebrating his birthday at his place, together with several friends of his, all of which have a present for him. One of his friends, Clarence, gives him his gift, a beautiful part of which John couldn't see even though he's 20/20. But John was happy with Clarence's present nonetheless. Can you explain it?
