Lone wolf

The lone wolf, Denis, a short fellow, went on a ride in the prairie. So he is riding alone on his horse, both in topnotch health and not hungry or thirsty. But at one moment, Denis shoots his horse dead. Why?

On the ride Denis and his horse come across a bunch of nasty bees which attack the horse. The horse is crazy with pain and begins to run like a demon possessed straight for edge of a big deep canyon. In the mayhem, Denis' foot got caught in the stirrup, so the only way to stop the horse from taking them both over the edge to their deaths is to shoot it and hopefully not land under it when it goes down?

Denis wanted to commit suicide. He tied a noose to a tree and put it around his neck while sitting on the horse. Not wanting the horse to suffer when his master is gone, he decides to kill his horse out of mercy and thus puts into motion his suicide by terminating his horse.

Good idea, but I had something else in mind.

Denis is a short fellow.  This is the only way he's got to get down from the horse unhurt.  Anyway, he always thought that he is not really a lone wolf when he is with his horse.

Denis is being chased, and he shoots his horse to hide behind as he is being shot at, and uses his own horse to shoot behind (as seen in Lonesome Dove).

or

Denis knows that someone is looking for him, so he kills his horse and hides inside the corpse, so when his followers ride by the horse, he jumps out and assaults them by surprise (as seen in Seraphim Falls).

Is the fact the Denis is short relevant? Would he have shot the horse had he been taller?

All right! I accepted it is an alternative answer, regardless of the riding alone part. Thumbs up!  Cool

Heh, another fine answer! Except, of course, for his footprints, which might be a big problem for Denis, unless they cannot track them on the rock? Hm.. I wonder if someone will get the intended answer. Wink

Denis is a jockey. When the horse does not perform to his expectation, he rides his horse into the sunset onto the killing field.

Or that leaving the dead horse behind might defer whoever might be tracking him.

Is it a shot like in vaccination?

edit: doesn't really fit with "Denis shoots his horse dead."

Was the murder of the horse pre-planned?

As seen in one episode of family guy:

Brian and Stewie were travelling to Europe, but ended up in the middle east. After landing there, they stole a camel and rode on it, ending up in the desert. However, when they realized that night was going to come, and that the temperature was going to drop very fast, they killed the camel, slit open its stomach, and used its insides as shelter.

I had figured you were going with a Star Wars reference on this one, not Family Guy.
