Denis is not armed, and there are no weapons on the ground near him, but when he bends down to tie his shoelace Jeff dies. What happened?

Hee hee, that was my initial guess as well. 
Jeff was in intensive care, kept alive by a life support machine. When denis bent down to tie his shoelace, he accidentally knocked down the IV stand, which in turn knocked down the power switch of the life support machine. Poor Jeff..

Close enough.  Yes, but in my version the bullet was meant for Jeff. I saw this in the movie Broken Arrow.
