Jack breaks open the door of Sam's house. He sees Sam's body hanging from the ceiling fan of the living room.He immediately calls the police. Sergeant Peterson comes to the spot and has a good look at the house. He finds nothing unusual.Everything is in its proper place. There are no signs of struggle. All doors and windows are closed from inside.Peterson is sure that it is a clear case of suicide. But then, he sees something which makes him realize that Sam did not commit suicide. He was murdered! What happened?

If there were water on the floor, that would mean that someone tried to make it look like a classical hang-yourself-slowly-while-the-big-ice-block-melts suicide. But a suicidal person wouldn't go to such length.

The chair or stool that is knocked over to give the impression it was suicide isn't tall enough to reach where his feet currently hang. Therefore, the stool (or whatever) wasn't how he got up there and he must have had assistence (though that is a kind way of putting it )

It is possible that the murderer was of very close relation to the victim and had a spare set of keys, so he/she could have just left and locked the doors.

Was Jack the murderer? He "broke" the door to make it look liked it was locked from the inside.

When Jack broke the door open it was really locked from inside. But what you think is right. So now, just think how it could be possible.

Ah, how about this: Jack locked the door from inside the house then he broke open the door from there.

The room has a lock on the door handle of the kind that you twist and then close the door after you and it stays locked from the inside? Often seen in house bathrooms, etc.

Ok, how about, Jack had actually locked it from the outside keeping the key, and then he is the first one to "discover" the crime scene, in which he busts through a top panel of the door with the key concealed in hand. He then "discovers" the key on the inside, making it look as if it had been locked from the inside the whole time. (occured in "The Hollow Man")

Good work again. But this is not what I had in my mind. Btw, the lock is definitely simple but the solution is even simpler. That makes the lock more complicated (relative to the solution).

Is it even locked? You said "closed from the inside" in the riddle... hmmm... if there is indeed a lock... uses a pick? (probably missing something painfully obvious... though it wouldn't suprise me considering my brain function at this time of night is bordering on zilch >.< )
