Rolling down the river

Tom trips and falls on two floating objects, and soon ends up in the water. He panics and tries to get out of the water right away. Because of it, he drowns rather fast. What happened?

Tom had an iron weight or some sort of heavy object attached to his ankles, that split a piece of driftwood in two. Then, he struggled to pull his feet out of the water, which made them fall in completely.
Btw, you didn't say the floating object was floating in the river, did you intend to?

Or he dies of hypothermia.
In both cases he should have stayed out of the water.

I've never heard of a toilet on top of floating logs...or, for that matter, floating logs in a toilet.

Those two objects woudn't happen to be those plastic inflatable floaters kids wrap around their arms? If he stepped into them they are now stuck on his feet. When he fell into the water, his feet stay at the surface. As he struggles, his body stays underwater and he drowns. If he just relaxed instead and floated on his back he would be OK.
