Dave and Hall were playing a $1000 poker game. And even though the cards were regular, unmarked and all, Dave knew that Hall was bluffing, and so he won. How he knew?

I assume Hall is at least a somewhat decent poker player, ruling out a lack of a poker face.

What kind of poker are they playing?  If it's a version with some cards shown (stud, hold 'em, etc.) Dave could be holding a card Hall would need to complete his hand (a straight, for instance) and so know Hall was bluffing.

More generically, if Dave is an experienced player and Hall is not, there are a lot of "tells" Dave could have picked up on.  Inexperienced poker players typically try to represent the opposite of what they're holding -- they try to make a good hand look week (seem reluctant to bet, bet too small, etc.) and a weak hand look strong (bet too quickly and too much, etc.).  They also will often sit forward (tense) for a weak hand and lean back (relax) for a strong hand.  So if Hall is sitting forward, betting without hesitation, and betting too much for the size of the pot, there's a very good chance he's bluffing.

Hall was wearing glasses which reflect the image of the cards back to Dave when he held his cards at a proper angle.

All rubbish Grin excepting denis' answer. But he wasn't wearing glasses, and they were alone.

Because Hall was betting as if he had the only winning hand which Dave actually had?

What if Dave was holding the highest hand possible in poker? (I'm not sure what that is but I think its a Royal Flush).

Yep, the spade suit Royal Flush.

Of course, Icey, when you say Dave knows Hall is bluffing, does that mean he has nothing, trying to pass it off as something, or is it merely Dave knows he had the higher hand ?

Or maybe Hall gave out all 5 cards, requesting new 5 ones.

Are they playing 5 card stud (or some other form where there is no community cards)? or are they playing something like Texas Hold'em where there are community cards? Is Dave the dealer?

Does it matter what form of poker they are playing? and if Yes, can you tell us which or would that give away the answer?

Wait, when you say "he won," are you referring to Dave? To my knowledge, the dealer doesn't play in poker (unlike blackjack).

Yea sure he can play if you are just playing amongst friends!! Do you hire dealers when friends are playing in poker? You use a "dealer button" to indicate who is the dealer and you actually deal and you pass it around!!

Anyways, Iceman are you implying Dave is cheating and hence he knows Hall is bluffing because then he will always know what he has and Hall has.

Would you like to share your victory with ima1trkpny, or vice versa, and SMQ?Roll Eyes I think that might be fair. But let it be more of a lesson: instead of snap guesses, try to provide all relevant details, unless you like to guess like that.  Wink

The surface of the table is shiny so Dave deals the cards cleverly (not looking at the bottom of the card but he angles it just slightly enough that he can see the reflection on the table top). Or if they have community cards he could be card counting (though that technically isn't illegal as long as you are doing it in your head  Grin ).

When me and my friends play poker, we don't play $1000 poker games.  Roll Eyes

EDIT: And to answer your question, no we don't hire dealers, but the dealer does not play, (s)he sits out that round.

Well, along another line, Hall bluffed by pretending that he knows how to play poker.  But when they started playing, it became obvious he hadn't the slightest clue.
