Agent James has been given a task by his boss to find a particular radio device in France, and press its green button, as it has three buttons altogether, green, black and yellow. If he presses black or yellow button, the acid in this device will be released and it will destroy the important message. Time is of essence and he does find it, in France, and he has 7 minutes to press the right button, after which the message it carries will be useless to his boss in London. Unfortunately for James, his flashlight turns dead and it is dark night filled with clouds so not even moonlight can get through. He prays for lighting so he could glance the right button, alas, there was no lightning that night to assist him. So he is on the plain and all stores are at least half an hour away, and no other objects are anywhere near or on his person. Interestingly enough, when James touched the device, that is, before he opened it, & it took him a couple of seconds to open it, this activated another radio signal, that was sent directly to his opponent Goldfinger, revealing device's location. This, of course, looked pretty bad to Goldfinger, so since he couldn't use the device remotely, he does something else to try to prevent agent James to press the green button. But this Goldfinger's action backfired, as soon James presses the button with assurance. What happened?

Ok, maybe he raised some alarm, and all of sudden, there are flashing lights all around.

I said that there are no objects near & his men are far away from James. Not bad though but I hadn't that in mind. I modified the riddle a bit so just read it again.

Maybe James has a cell phone which is set to light up only when other people call, not when you press a key, etc. So Goldfinger tries to call James to persuade him not to press the button (bribe, trying ti trick James, etc.) but James uses the light of the cell phone to see the button he needs to push. A little implausible, I know.

Upon opening the device, Goldfinger sends another radio message to the device, shutting it again. Upon doing so, bright sparks are somehow created in the closing process, allowing James to see the correct button.

Since Goldfinger now knew the location of the device, he pointed one of his satelite laser weapon orbiting earth to those coordinates and fired. Since acuracy is only up to a few metters (just enough to hit a building), he really just managed in lighting up a small fire in the dry grass not too far from james. The fire gave enough light for James to identify the right button.

In practice there is no need for such a device, certainly not the way it is now, in its infant stage. I suppose that laser can deprive James from his privates, but I am more oriented on reality than science fiction. But yes, you are on the right track.

Goldfinger sends the coordinates to the helicopters/planes that are sweeping the area, looking for James. The aircrafts use their spotlights to try to find the agent so they can gun him down, and the light is able to help him see the button before they find his exact location.

No aircrafts were that close meaning that no flying device is that fast. We are talking about seconds here. on Jun 26th, 2007, 12:44pm, Sameer wrote:Does Goldfinger have a weather making machine? |

ok to be clear... Goldfinger sends "something" over "radio signals" that does "something" to the device, that somehow helps 007?

Ok, what could Goldfinger possibly sent over the radio signals, that does not connect to the device in any way ? 007's cellphone ? 007's PDA ? A tv set ? A radio set ? Walkie talkie ?

"So he is on the plain and all stores are at least half an hour away, and no other objects are anywhere near or on his person." Clearly, he is alone, naked, with a dead flashlight and a particular radio device. The device can transmit voice. Goldf*r transmits "Be warned, one of the buttons will make the device explode. Is it the small black square button? The medium triangular yellow one? Or the big round green one? I won't tell you which. Are you ready to take the risk?"

Goldfinger sent a voice message to the radio device, saying: "If you were here yesterday, I would have told you that the button on the left was the green button." Goldfinger is attempting to lure James from the left button. However, no matter if Goldfinger is telling the truth or lying, James knows with confidence that the leftmost button must be the green button! (BTW this was a joke, albeit a poor one)

It is very important to Goldfinger that James' boss doesn't get the message.

When the radio device start beeping, James realizes that it runs on batteries. He removes the batteries, puts them in the flash light and quickly presses the green button. Nothing. He presses again a few times with force, they way you press an elevator button when you are followed by a maniac serial killer. He gets panicked: he is going to fail his mission and he can do nothing. Suddenly he stops, like paralyzed for a few seconds. Then he bursts into a hysterical laughter. He realized that removing the battery has disabled the auto destruction mechanism. He just removes the secret message and ... well, what good is a secret message when you are alone in a field, naked, with nothing but a working flash light and a dead radio device? That's not a problem for James. He beams the message to a spy satellite using the flash light an morse code. The planet is saved.
