Cursed Island

Paulie notices hoof footprints in the snow near his house. He starts to follow the prints and soon he realizes that they belong to the devil, which then approaches him bobbing along, and opens his mug: 'Hello Paulie! Would you like to play a little game? If you win, you'll get a big crock of gold! And if you lose, I'll get your soul..' Paulie says: 'I'm still listening..' Devil continues: 'All right then. Out of the next nine months, you pick a day, starting from this one, for me to take you to the Cursed Island. It will take 6 hours for us to get there in your canoe, which will be propelled by my dark power. As you know, there is an abandoned hut on this secluded island. I recently altered its only window by adding a metal plate, to make sure that you'll be in utter and complete darkness after I lock you in for three days. Also, you won't be able to hear any sound coming from outside, as I'll use my unholy magic to create a soundproof invisible shield around the hut. When we get to the hut, 1st thing I'll do right away, is to use my black magic to make you sleep up to 24 hours. It will be impossible for you to determine how much you've slept, and note that the above sleep will be included in the mentioned three days. But you won't be lonely, as I'll keep you company all the time in the darkness, so that you can make an assertion at anytime, after you wake up. You must get the time of a day right, and the statement can be either of the following four terms: morning, afternoon, evening or night. And if you get it right, you'll win! One more thing: no other objects must be on or anywhere near the island, except the above canoe. Of course, I wouldn't propose this game if there weren't any chances for you. There are rules I must follow, black magic or not, otherwise priest's blessing would shrivel me up in a minute. And that's it from my part.' Being covetous, Paulie agrees. Can Paulie improve his chances?

In the nine month before leaving, Paulie takes note of his beard patterns for up to 72 hours after shaving and practices guessing the time that has passed since he shaved.

Once he perfected the technique, Paulie shaves just before leaving for the cursed island. By feeling his face for the length of stuble just before sleeping and after he wakes up, he can guess how much time passed after he was put to sleep. wether its still morning (no stuble), afternoon (5 aclock shadow beard) or evening (peach fuzz), or night (long stuble)

alternatively, he can feel the wall of the hut to see when it is warmest (afternoon) or when it is coldest (night)

I thought the same.  I would feel the metal plate covering the window.  When arriving on the island, check the orientation of the window.

I don't see any other reason for the window to be mentionned at all.

Of course, looking at your digital watch or listening to the radio would also help.

But wood is not a conductor, so Grimbal is the winner. Yes, he chooses a summer day.
