Sharpshooter

John and Trigger are running away from Tom and his crew. In fact, John and Trigger were a part of this crew, but John stole some money early morning so he is on the run. As for Trigger, who is not very bright, for some reason, Trigger started to run in the middle of the night. Both men are riding on horses toward a town called Triggerton. Tom knows a cold-blooded sharpshooter there, so he contacts him using Morse code, and tells him to kill John who has a gray outfit. Tom stresses that he leaves alone Trigger who is in black outfit, as Tom will deal with Trigger himself. But when Trigger arrives to the above town, the sharpshooter kills him, even though he was wearing the black uniform and he wasn't armed. Why?

I don't know Morse code, but I bet it has something to do with word play, maybe Tom wants the sharpshooter to kill John who is in Triggerton, but then due to mis-interpretation of the code, the killer eventually kills Trigger instead.

There was no misinterpretation. He got the message right. And there is no play on words.

In the middle of the night, one cannot distinguish between black and grey

I seem to remember a scene in a movie where a confederate in a dark blue uniform arrives among soldiers of the union army in gray uniform (you know, the US civil war), and they think he is one of them because the dirt has completely covered the uniform. As they clean up a bit the uniform they realize he is the ennemy.

Yes, that particular scene inspired me. It is plausible to be covered in dust like that.

| That is from "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly", but you have the colors mixed up. Confederates wore gray, Union soldiers wore Blue. Goldy and Tuco were wearing gray confederate uniforms they had taken off of dead soldiers and saw a troop in gray coming so they decided to pretend to be confederates. Unfortunately for them, the troop was actually Union soldiers covered in gray dust.
