Richard has a pistol, and several men with superior firepower are pursuing him. There was nobody else, but at one moment, he fires a few shots in the air. Why?

Trying to shoot a bird for dinner? Trying to bring down an avalanche on his pursuers? Just for the hell of it?

I kinda agree with towr's second suggestion : He was tring to shoot at rocks / sand / ice, to create an avalance.. Or maybe, Die Hard 3 ?

The USA plan a manned mission to Mars. They have technical problems with life systems and can't actually send people there. For political reasons (they don't want the USSR to reach there first) they decide to fake the thing. They send an empty rocket. They stage the mission on Earth, in some desert to show videos of the mission (you know, the way they did already for the Apollo mission). Everything went fine, but on the flight back the rocket misses reentry. The astronauts staging the mission realize that if they are ever seen again the whole story bursts. They decide to run for their life and cross the desert to civilization. Several men with superior firepower are pursuing them. They split in the hope that at last one of them survives. They have no weapon, only two alarm pistols that shoot flares. The decide that when they get caught they shoot a few flares in the air to inform the other. So, when Richard sees the men approaching, he shoots the rockets he has.

Hollywood movies are not so bad. And good idea regarding Die Hard 3 suggestion, but he fired w/o aim.

I remember now. That was an old movie. I wasn't even born back then. I am very young: I'm only 29. I still play hide-and-seek, Monopoly, watch cartoons. My mother embarrasses me by calling me from the window to come home for the dinner. Yes, these are the days of innocent youth. I am far away from my second childhood.

Also stealing this one from a movie, he could be firing his gun near a flock of birds that are currently on the ground, to make them them fly up and distract/camouflage himself.
