Deadly Romance

Brendan and Mindy have been a couple for several years now. Today, Brendan comes to his girlfriend, Mindy's, house. As Brendan waits on the porch, Mindy, hearing the doorbell, goes to see who it is. Mindy opens the door, then immediately goes back inside, grabs the first sharp object in sight, and then stabs Brendan in the head with said object, killing him instantly. What happened?

That's what I thought at first, but I thought it was too farfetched.
Brendan arrived with someone else (IDK who; probably someone who Mindy did't like), and that someone rang the doorbell. He ran away while Mindy was getting the sharp object, leaving Brendan alone, and when she came out, she was in such a rage that she stabbed the man at the door before realizing who it was. I know that one's wrong...

Hint: Recently, theirs was a long-distance relationship.
Bigger hint: This was Brendan's first trip out to see Mindy. Mindy did not expect him because she knew he couldn't afford the ticket.

As a surprise, Brendan was "delivered" in a large box. His friends placed the box, with Brendan inside it, on the doorstep, rang the bell, and ran away. Mindy opened the door to discover a large mysterious box that was too heavy to move, so she went inside to get a sharp object. In a frenzy of joy and excitement at what this wonderous box could contain she cut open the top of the box. Alas, poor Brendan!
