A robust man threw an intact porcelain vase with his whole might, but the vase did not break when it touched hard surface, which blocked its way. What happened??

His whole might wasn't actually that much since he was suffering from a rare muscle disease

| And I suppose he's also not terribly sleepy and thusly drained of strength? Another guess, bubblewrap?

...The vase was also encased inside a well protected (padded) case.

| No. He had a good night sleep. on Dec 27th, 2006, 12:36pm, raven wrote:...The vase was also encased inside a well protected (padded) case. |
| No protection. No bubble wrap either.

He threw it at the ceiling while standing on matrasses. When the vase hit the ceiling (the hard surface) it had slowed to a crawl due to gravity. And when it return to the ground, it fell on the matresses.

| Yes, but whether the vase broke afterwards is not important for this riddle. Maybe we will find about it in the 3rd sequel.

I realise that surface tension might cause it to break, but he could have thrown it with might into a body of water and it sank gracefully until coming to rest on the hard surface below. Or he threw it with all his might along a relatively smooth surface. The friction reduced it to an almost standstill speed before finally being brought to rest as it gently touches a wall.

It could have been a diver doing underwater archaeology. Close to Sir Col's answer.
