A serpent swam in a silver urn
A golden bird did in its mouth abide
The serpent drank the water, this in turn
Killed the serpent. Then the gold bird died.

What happened?

hidden:
The serpent was swimming in some silver poison lethal to only snakes, the bird then got the serpent in it's mouth to eat it. The serpent then drank some of the water with it in the bird's mouth, and died. Shortly after the bird died of hunger b/c there was no other type of food listed in the riddle for the bird to survive on after it ate the serpent.

As u may have noticed, i'm more of a logic riddle type.

Funny.  As a hint and a way of discouraging answers on the extreme end of lateral thinking, I say this: the riddle is more a combination of a "What Am I?" type riddle and a "What Happened?" riddle than a purebred form of either.  It does seem to fit better here, though.

Well since it is in what happened section, time for the yesnoers.

Was there actual water involved?

Is the golden bird an actual bird?

Are they alive to begin with?

No to all your questions.  Man, this is going to be too easy now.

Er, I can't definitively answer that with a yes or no.  If you rephrase it, maybe I could.

Mmmm.  Possibly.  Phrasing again.  I'd recommend trying a different approach and returning to this line of questioning later.

How's that.  Grin

Altogether it sounds like an oil lamp? The water being the fuel, the serpent being the wick, the golden bird being the flame.
