Bowlegged Sally, most feared of the lady pirates had suspicions of mutiny on board.
She gathered all of the office-hers (she always liked that pun) in to her quarters.

"I knows whats goings ons here," she said, making full use of pirates-lack-of-grammar clause.
"Youse all wants to take me ship from I." A nervous silence was only broken by the creaking of Lady Beatrice's futtocks Wink as she rocked gently from side to side, slopping the smoky latern on it's long rusty chain so  long, yellowy flickering shadows jumped across the bowdaughter's face.

"There have been those that have accused me of irrational practices' " she spat at her vicitms, with the twised venom that years at sea instils visibly rising across her face. " They says I were a idiot for issuing  gladioli to the crew in the place of cut-lasses,  but how much sweeter smelling be the cabin now?"

"so I issues a Challenge to you... We plunge our hands into my booty box" (a few sniggers bubbled out of the younger, more sassy city-pirate-folk before they could chew them back down) "and each of we grab one item of jewellery."

"She that grabs the most opaque item in there is to be deemed the head mutineer and be cast adrift..."

So Bowlegged Sally whisked off her blouse and exposing her chest, a large wooden casket filled with plundered goods.

"Right me hearties, dig in..."

She sets the pearl on the table just as a pair of robbers break into her house.  Grin

Don't concern yourselves with why did she put it on the table,  Wink because I myself don't have the answer, and this is my riddle. She just did, maybe because, her pearl necklace broke, and she is picking pearls one by one, placing them on table,  Undecided where she will try to fix it. There can be other reasons, even though I can't think of one, since pearls are to expensive to put them on the table, even for a short while.

There was a Geiger-Muller detector on the table too. When he put the pearl next to it, it showed that the pearl was contaminated, probably with Polonium 210.

Since this is a "what happened" riddle, shouldn't we be asking yes or no questions to make it easier to solve?

Then let me ask: Was the pearl supposed to be somewhere else?

Like where? Not sure what you are driving at, but I'd say no.

What I was asking is whether she had intended that the pearl be somewhere else, but upon discovering that by some accident she has it, she realizes that she is in danger.

Where or how is immaterial at this time: as flamingdragon points out, these sorts of riddles are usually approached by asking yes or no questions. If your answer had been yes, it would invite further inquiry in this direction. As you have answered no, instead this direction of inquiry is closed off, and we need not devote more time to it.

She puts the pearl on the table. It sits there for a moment then starts to wobble and rolls off the table as her house suddenly tips into a sink hole.

Desert Lizard is on the right track. In fact, she practically solved the riddle, but sinkhole? Dunno much about sinkholes, but who would be crazy enough to build the house there?  Huh

If there is earthquake, you do not need the pearl.   Wink

hidden:
All right, pearl starts to wobble b/c a tornado/hurricane?

or TREMORS!? (Those movies are awesome!)

Or perhaps the pearl shook b/c her house was in the middle of a mine field, some one set one off, and each ones blast hits another one creating a chain reaction until eventually her house is blown up!
