Tommy, who is in topnotch health, is in a restaurant where he has a meeting with a business partner. His stomach is growling a bit, and he always wanted to taste a baklava. So since Tommy is early, he decides to order this filling dessert. If he hadn't order it, he would have died. What happened? Wink

The restaurant owner shoots everyone that doesn't order baklava?
Free gasmasks with every order of baklava, and just an hour later there was a poisonous gas attack?
If Tommy hadn't ordered baklava, he'd have been on a plane that just happened to crash minutes after take off?

That would've been my first guess if it didn't conflict with "topnotch health".

Baklava, while delicious, is also quite messy to eat. After eating the baklava, he went to the restroom to wash up. While he was in the restroom, a gas explosion destroyed most of the restaurant, including the area Tommy was seated.

He was supposed to meet his business partner at an assigned table in one corner of the restaurant. His business partner was crooked and ordered a mob hit by blowing up the table. However, Tommy was at the bar ordering so he wasn't hurt Wink

Yes, a really good answer. It agrees with everything I mentioned in the riddle, so I must accept it.  Cool I remember having a rich main course plus the baklava for dessert, but one could be satiated with this dessert alone. One thing which falters a bit regarding your answer, if faltering is the right word,  Huh is that it probably means that a waiter was not suppose to be the one to poison him. This makes his business partner a main suspect, who has a little chance of poisoning Tommy, unless they are sitting in a separate dinning room. And even then, this is not an easy task, unless Tommy frequently visits the rest room because of his bladder. Still, the intended answer is still out there, so allow me to propose a slightly different riddle: let us suppose that poison had nothing to do with it, because in this restaurant there is a little possibility that someone poisons you. Let the hunt for my idea begin! Err.........  Tongue

Fine answer, but I can't accept it. If a riddle has two answers, I can live with that. But if it has three, my blood goes up,  Angry even though I am cold as ice.  Tongue But good thing you are considering properties of baklava Icarus. This might direct you on the right track.  Wink

Not bad, but not the answer I had in mind, so Tommy was sitting all the time. Wink  Lips Sealed

The businessman hired a hitman to kill Tommy.  The hitman was looking for a man who hadn't started eating yet, not a guy who was obviously at the end of his meal.  So he killed someone else.

Baklava is sticky, that's true, and I like the idea that he went to the bathroom, which may have caused his business partner to think he'd either not shown up or already eaten and left. I wasn't quite sure about the method of killing, so I mentioned 'poison' which would be the most obvious.

This one's out there a bit...but maybe it has something to do with an allergic reaction to nuts, or some other ingredient in nuts.

Well, what if the Bakhlava was not good that day in the restaurant and made him sick.
From there on the story can take many turns. E.g. he was taken to hospital, while next night his home collapsed, etc.

Baklava is a rich, sweet pastry found in many cuisines of the Middle East, South Asia, and the Balkans. It is made of chopped nuts, usually walnuts or pistachios, layered with phyllo pastry, sweetened with sugar or honey syrup.

A terrorist wanted to blow up the restaurant.  Seeing Tommy eating the baklava, he thought: he is a good fellow, he eats middle-east.  (Because all terrorists are from the middle-east, aren't they?)  So he blew up a fast food instead.

His business partner had no intention of eating but had a serious drinking session planned. Tommy, being in top-notch health, is not used to drinking large amounts of alcohol, so drinking on an empty stomach would have made him very drunk. Because he had something substantial to eat before it helped absorb some of the alcohol. As a result, when they left the restaurant, he was alert enough to avoid that speeding car that a more drunken man might have missed.

or

Tommy, who has a serious nut allergy, had never heard about baklava until a few years ago when he met his Turkish business partner. Since then his partner, who knew about his allergy, had slowly fed Tommy with stories about this wonderful traditional Assyrian dessert, and because of his wicked intentions he assured him that it did not contain nuts. The business partner arranged to meet at this Turkish restaurant because they served an amazing traditional baklava, and knowing that Tommy did not speak Turkish he was hoping to order the dish in Turkish to avoid any warnings about containing nuts. Fortunately for Tommy he ordered the dish before his partner arrived and the waiter was kind enough to explain to him what the dish contained.

No to both.

I did mention properties of baklava, but these properties are not directly involved, regarding the solution. In fact, properties of baklava don't have anything to do with it. But they might direct you on the right track, like I said.  Wink

One simple answer: It was The Baklava of Eternal Life!

It so happens that the ingredients were mixed in that old bowl that was found in an antique shop near Jerusalem and is said to be 2000 years old.  The restaurant owner says it is good for business: he hasn't lost a single client since.

hmmm... let's see... Tommy had always been very unhappy with his business partner. There were growing suspisions and business was not doing good. Tommy had decided to call his business partner and end the partnership in the restaurant... His business partner however knew about the plans and decided to trick Tommy. Tommy however was aware of his business partner's motives. So he hid a gun in the bathroom taped behind the flush. He orders the baklava and waits for his partner. He finishes his baklava as his partner arrives. He goes to the bathroom to wash up, gets the gun and shoots his business partner. Now even Mario Puzo would be proud!!  Tongue

hmmm, I hope the riddles that were on the first page hadn't changed too much. I also hope that I don't need to read through all of them, and the clue will really be in the title.

The place was robbed? and the robbers love baklava, and stole his, instead of killing him?
