Dear Paul: I am in USA with my young daughter Melissa. She made this drawing for you. I would ask you about the weather, but since you are in London, I don't need to. About the other night. We were a bit drunk and your remark was like an arrow into my heart, but I am almost over it now. This is why, I still wont tell you, in which state we are, even though you are a curious creature and you like to travel. But I will give you a clue: something is missing. Best, John

Alabama* Alaska Arizona Arkansas California Colorado* Connecticut* Delaware Florida* Georgia* Hawaii Idaho Illinois Indiana Iowa Kansas Kentucky Louisiana* Maine Maryland* Massachusetts* Michigan Minnesota Mississippi* Missouri Montana Nebraska Nevada New Hampshire New Jersey* New Mexico* New York* North Carolina* North Dakota Ohio Oklahoma Oregon Pennsylvania* Rhode Island South Carolina* (well I live there..) South Dakota Tennessee* Texas* Utah Vermont Virginia* Washington West Virginia Wisconsin Wyoming It's one of those. & just for the hell of it, the asterisks (*) are states I've either driven through or visited, cause I can barely remember. Heh. I'll say montana, cause there's not a whole lot there that I know of, and the clue isn't there either.

The green shape in the drawing is a map of Virginia. That may be a clue of some sort.

I take it this riddle requires a certain familiarity with USA geography? I'll just give up now if that's the case

If John has dyslexia, I'll tell you where he is right away But my guess would be somewhere in Northampton.

The problem statement doesn't even have a question. Are we supposed to guess what state the author of the letter is in? Sameer says Kentucky because there is a London in KY, but the letter is addressed to somebody in London, not from London. The main thing missing from that map is the portion of VA on the Delmarva peninusla. I suppose the problem is meant for us to guess the state based on a partial outline of it. Considering that Melissa draws the sun like a small child, she sure did a good job on Virginia, although parts of it look unrealistically fractal-like, particularly just west of the northernmost point.

| Good point. But she is talented. Or even better, she is autistic. Another possibility is, that John was lying, and Melissa drew just the sun.
