A man marries twenty women in his village but isn't charged with polygamy

Why?

Because he married each one in succession, after his previous wife died.

Puffster: Yes, he was the priest marrying couples.

BNC: Well in these forums solved problems would keep repeating themselves by other people but i just reworded it from a zen type card i remember reading with a guy bouncing on a trampoline and a message that said something like 'if you don't settle out your problems you will be destined to repeat them over and over and over....'
but i suppose i'll change the message.

It would also work if polygamy was legal. You can't be charged with doing something legal, after all.

The old Batman series?

Anyway, polygamy is allowed in various cultures and countries. So no need to make it legal; you can just find a situation were it already is. Mormons in the US can be legally polygamous, can't they?

Towr:  No Wink  That was way back in the day when there weren't many of them and the guys kept getting themselves shot.

I wish I'd read this one earlier, because it immediately made me think of my father who married his sister Tongue

No. Polygamy has never been legal in the United States. In order for Utah to become a State in the U.S., they were required to make polygamy illegal. Those who still practice it do so by legally marrying only one of their brides. The others brides are only married in their own minds, and perhaps their local congregation's minds. Even the main body of the Morman church does not recognize such marriages anymore. While this is legal, most polygamists are guilty of fraud because they are unable to support their large families without government assistance, which they have to lie to get.
