A policeman was walking past a house. He heard somone cry, "Don't shoot me, John! Don't shoot!" There was one gunshot. The policeman entered the house and saw a lawyer, priest, and an engineer, gathered around a dead body. The priest was immediately arrested. How did the policeman know?

The priest was the only male... aside from the real killer who just slipped out the back. Shoddy police work as usual!

Yeah, if cops don't shoot first and ask questions later, they arrest and ask questions later. What's with that?!

| hidden: | The engineer and lawyer were both females while the gender corresponding to the priest was male. Since, "John" corresponds to a masculine first name, the policeman inferred that the perpetrator of the crime must be a man.. Consequently, the officer arrested the only living male (the priest) at the scene of the crime. |

hidden: | One solution could be that the priest was holding a gun when the cop walked in. Another is that the cop knew the 3 people, and knew that only the priest's name was John. Or maybe he didn't know who the actual murder was, but arrested the priest, along with the other 2 suspects for questioning. |

A better solution than the intended, since "Jon" is not that uncommon as a girl's name (at least here in the US), and I defy anyone to tell the difference between "Jon" and "John" when spoken!

No, women are pastors or preachers, only men are priests. One of the few religion where women are "priests" is paganism, and then theyre referred to as "priestesses".

Some denominations do call women priests simply "priests." I believe Anglicans are the most common, but I may be mistaken. Regardless, I still think this is the intended answer to the riddle.

The intended answer is that the priest is the only man in the room, so the policeman figures he must be "John". It makes no difference whether women can be priests or not, as long as a priest can be a man, and women can fill each of the other occupations.

Here's some more answers: hidden: | The other two ran when the cop came and he was to lazy to chase after them. The priest was wearing a name tag with "John" on it. The other two were wearing name tags and none of them said "John" on them. He hates priests. He likes engineers and lawers. He randomly chose someone. The priest confessed. The priest was holding up a sign saying he killed him. The other two said the priest did it. | BTW female priests are also called nuns arent they?

Nuns are not female priests. Priests are ordained to perform certain religious services, and nuns are not. Nuns are more equivalent to monks: They both take vows of separation from worldly concerns, and of service, but are not ordained to the priesthood. Catholicism restricts the priesthood to men only. (I am assuming we are talking about catholicism here, since female dedicates of other religions are not generally known as "nuns".)

Thanks for the info. hidden: | The priest attacked the cop. One of the other two had a tape recorder, which the cop checked and matched it with the priests voice saying he was going to kill the victim. | I could come up w/ a million answers for this one.

Or.... since the cop knew that each one was distinguished in careers, the lawyer would have had to have a suitcase or identification card on him/her as well as the Engineer. The Priest is only answer because his identification would be his clothing and yes he could be the only male.

Personally, I think it was because the priest was standing there holding a smoking gun, breathing heavily and shaking in anger, while the other two were staring at him in abject terror.

Maybe the local order of priests were named after St. John of the Cross, and all the ordained priests were formally referred to as 'Father John, 'Brother John, or informally as just 'John'. $0.02
