Farmer's horse

To scale this down you have a 1x3 table in which the farmer attatched the rope to the horse to keep it from eating the hay . the rope is only long enough to reach one square over, with the post in the far left square and the hay in the far right, aka, the horse is in the middle square. But when the farmer returns from getting a drink he instantly knows that the horse ate the hay. How

P.S i've already said that im sorry if my riddles are too easy, already posted etc. but sorry if the wording wasn't too good, if you want to draw it up then make a 1x3 square table with the hay in the far right, horse in middle and post in far left, with a one square length rope attatched to the horse. Also, all info. is in the riddle. Smiley Wink Cheesy Grin Cool Tongue

The hay is all gone...

or alternatively

The hay is gone and the horse is no longer attached to the post.

I would say those are pretty immediate ways of knowing who ate the hay.

Yes, the hay is gone, and the horse naturally did eat the hay and you've actually solved the riddle with that post. i would bold the important text, but then you will have figured it out like *fingers snap* that. but you did answer it

but my question is both how did the farmer know that the horse ate the hay and how did the horse eat the hay?

Well, you did say the rope was attached to the horse but nothing was said about it being attached to the post in question.

Because there were no other footsteps, so he deduced that it was the horse.
And if you combine Maverick's answer and mine, you get the winner. Or do you?   Tongue

Or the horse ate the farmer too. Since horses have a slow digestion, the farmer switched on his flashlight and he saw the hay in horse's stomach.

Iceman has a point.  Slow digestion.

I think Grimbal got the real answer though.

Clearly the question is: how does he know that the horse ate the hay.
My guess is that the horse has this particular smile that some teenagers have when they did something they were not supposed to do.
