You forgot to mention that he was naked.

It's been around here at least 3 or 4 times before. I won't say anymore, though, for the sake of those who haven't seen it.

He drew the shortest straw. You can make up whatever story you want as to how he ended up dead after that. But usually it's plummeting from a 'sinking' hot air ballon.

In addition to the nakedness, most versions of the riddle also inform you that leading to where the man is dead is a long line of luggage and equipment. The story generally goes like this (highlight the yellow area to see the hidden text): hidden: | Two or more riders in a hot-air balloon have found themselves out of fuel. For reasons that vary from story to story, to set down where they are would be fatal (often the man is found in the middle of desert too large to have any hope of walking out of without supplies). So they start jettisoning everything on board in order the maintain enough height to reach safety. Unfortunately, even after everything, including their clothes have been tossed overboard, they are still too heavy. So they break straws from the basket, and draw straws to pick someone to jump out. The dead man drew the short straw. |

Although when he lands he's gonna have one hell of a time trying to explain why he is in a hot air balloon with no clothes, baggage or equipment. Chances are that he would get arrested and charged with some sort of murder (actualy, would it be considered murder? surely since the other guy would have died anyway, they can't really charge him) - although public indecency is a crime
