A shoplifter starts stealing small items and over a period of time steals
larger and larger items, but then suddenly stops altogether". What is going
on??

Clue: SHe cannot stop because if she stops, she could get caught.

Clue2: there's only one woman who can steal in that way

Had an "aha!" about this one. The woman is faking pregnancy and stealing items by hiding them under her shirt. The wording of the question may be a little off, as more than "one woman" could do this.

If I understood ChunkTug's first answer, he meant the tooth fairy. However, this wouldn't work as teeth lost are all roughlt the same size. Also, the type of tooth lost would make a difference on the size.

On a completely unrelated topic (well, not COMPLETELY unrelated), why is the tooth fairy a woman? I grew up with her being a mouse. Undecided

It is unfortunate that some parents delude their little ones with fantastic lies about the Tooth Fairy. The Tooth Fairy is most certainly not a mouse, but of human form, although much smaller than a normal human.

Does anyone know the answer to this riddle? I suppose the shoplifter got caught due to stealing larger and more risky items, got arrested, and therefore the stealing came to a sudden stop. The fake pregnant woman suggestion doesn't make sense. It kind of fits the ever larger stolen items as each day passes, but if store security is observant enough to notice an increase in the size of her belly from day to day, they should notice the sizable increase that occurs between the time she enters and leaves the store.

The tooth fairy leaves payment, I can hardly see how it could be considered shoplifting.

Another question: it says that she stops in the riddle, then in the clue that she cannot stop. So does she stop (and I assume get caught)?

I believe the fake pregnancy was the intended answer, even given SWF's valid objection. She "cannot stop" because she continues to visit the store, and if her belly suddenly shrinks, everyone will know she wasn't pregnant after all. Once the time for her "delivery" is reached, she must now stop.

I believe that the framer of this puzzle overlooked the fact that she must also fake her pregnancy coming into the store.

Hmm.. not if the trick was to steal a little at a time, keeping everything under the dress for 9 months until the supposed release, where she can unload everything in the fridge.  Grin

Of course, if what sthe stole goes in the fridge, it might not be the best stealing method.

I would agree, except the puzzle specifies that she started by stealing small items, but her stolen items increased in size over time.

Something tells me that eliminates the pregnancy answer, since I guarantee you there is more than one pregnant woman right now.

Thus ChunkTug's comment that the wording was off.

But I am only giving my theory anyway. I could be wrong. But at this stage, I am doubtful that jpcansa is going to turn up again to say "yeah" or "nay".

Ah, I actually read that comment, but kind of forgot about it. As for Jp, he registered here, posted, and that's been it since he was last here in october of last year. We can guess at it all we want, but I doubt there's a definite yes or no.

This must be what jpcansa was thinking of:

A woman thief has tricked her friend, a pet store owner, into believing a pet snake eats rats, and the owner is too squeamish to watch. Each day the owner drops a rat into the box with the snake and goes away while the thief pretends to be watching the snake eat it. Actually the thief is stealing the rats. Since the owner had purchased a bunch of young rats at once, they grow a bit each day. Thus the thief is stealing larger ones each time. Being that it is not really the type of snake that eats rats, it eventually dies from malnutrition and the thief has to suddenly stop stealing.

Had she stopped stealing while the snake was alive the woman would be an instant suspect when it was seen that the snake doesn't touch rats.  There is only one woman who can steal that way because the store owner, not wanting to offend sensitive customers, allows only that one woman to monitor the snake feeding.
