John and Mark are jogging. Mark stops because his lace was untied. While he was tying his sneaker John asked him to borrow him $3000 again. Mark says: "Two men are standing near each other and they start to run in the same direction. They are both running at the same speed but the distance between them after 5 seconds was grater than 5 meters. If you can explain this I will lend you the money." Needless to say, Mark lends him the money.

Was the 5m distance vertical? For example one of them ran off the edge of a cliff, or one of them ran up a ramp... --SMQ

They started from the north pole with their backs to each other and both ran due south

You say they start in the same direction at the same speed, but you don't say that they continue. Perhaps one or both change direction, speed, or maybe one of them trips. Also, I assume "standing near" each other means less than 2 meters or so? If they run really fast (miles per second), two close paths will naturally diverge by the curvature of the Earth.

Perhaps one of them was running on a gym's running machine (hence stayed still), and the other ran on ground and moved forward.

One had a greater acceleration until 5 seconds, when he reached a constant velocity equal to that of the other?

I agree with BNC's last post. Similarly, one could be running on a moving walkway, or any other surface that creates a reference frame different from the other jogger.

One of them is running on the other's head? One of them is running on ice? (and the other is not, of course) They are running on parallel lanes on a circle? They are both running ... out of fuel, but one has a larger tank? They are 1km high mutant ants (due to some radioactive accident) and they started 10m apart, which is considered near? They are running for presidency but one of them stopped for recounting the votes?

I like the ice answer. If one is running on solid ground, and the other on ice -- or a treadmill, or something like that -- then they'd end up far apart but be going the same rate.

Maybe some day you tell me about your specie. But don't tell me that you are predator. I think it is comming back to me.. yes, I think BNC's answer was the intended answer. I prefer honkyboy's answer myself. Of course, it is better if a riddle has one answer. And what of this nostalgia about old riddles? There are two new Hellraiser riddles still waiting to be solved. I am starting to think you dislike Hellraiser riddles, but that is not possible. Is it?

Since new ideas are suggested, how about this one: when they are running, both have the same speed, but one of them stopped because his lace was untied. So while he was tying his sneaker, the other one was sprinting like hell. After hi tied his sneaker, he continued sprinting, but could not make up for the lost time, because both are running at the same speed. Deedlit thought of this first.

Well then him stopping would make his speed equal zero, while the other was moving at a faster speed, so the speeds were definitely not equal.
