I need help with this riddle quickly... Please email me at lizzyj8@yahoo.com if you can help... You are walking down a road, and you come to a fork, where you meet two brothers. These brothers are identical in all aspects, except one may only tell the truth, and one can only tell lies. You do not know which fork to take, but you know that one side leads to eternal life and happiness, and one side leads to death and destruction. You may only ask one brother one question to figure out which road to take. You do not know which brother is the lier, and which tells the truth. What question would you ask? Thanks for you help... lizzyj8

don't worry guys- I've got it... just going to reply to email address with links. Maybe. [e] actually, no- can't be bothered, sorry. make sure only the easy or medium boxes are ticked, and search for either door, path or road. Guard will do it too. Fork as well. Don't forget that the story side of a riddle is often irrelevant. Sort of the icing on a cake. And if you were so eager, I hope you ticked the notify response box.... [/e]

Actually, the Fork in the Road riddles are in the Hard forum. To summarize: the following 2 solutions are both valid: Point down one of the two roads and ask "if I asked your brother, 'is this the way to death and destruction', would he agree?" or "if I were to ask you 'is this the way to life and happiness', would you agree?" In either case, head down that road if they say yes. The trick here is to ask a "meta-question", that is, a question about their answer to a different question. In the first case, a lie will always occur in exactly one of the question and meta-question, with the result that the total inference will always be false, and can be negated to get the truth. In the second question, if you ask the liar, then his lie for the meta-question cancels out his lie for the original question, resulting in a true answer. (By the way, it is assumed here that rather than really lying, the one brother always makes statements that are false. Such a person is far more dependable than a liar. A liar can get around any trick you try, because his intent is to deceive you, so he will say whatever is necessary to do so: truth or falsehood.)

Thomassss (1) STOP SHOUTING!!! Turn your "caps lock off"! (2) Please, Please, Please read more carefully before you decide to criticize! I did not tell her to "ask two questions". I gave her two different solutions to the puzzle. Either question by itself solves the problem. (3) Your question would have the brothers scratching their heads, and wondering what kind of lunatic would be asking about which door to go through, when there are no doors anywhere around! (Once again, you really need to work on those reading skills.)
