Last Supper

This is a really old one, and though I have seen one posting simillar to this, I think there is enough variation to post this one too.

One evening a man leaves his apartment to go to a restraunt down the street. When he arrives, he is seated and orders his supper. The meal comes, and after taking one bite the man pays his check and returns home where he takes out the gun he keeps by his bed and shoots himself dead.

What happened?

I haven't heard this one before, so this is a stab in the dark:
:: The food was poisoned. Rather than die a slow, painful death, he choose the quick and easy method. ::

Nope, the food is perfectly edible and quite tasty actually. If the man had not shot himself he would not have died.

Maybe I've heard this one before (or something similar).

hint: You could say the food is a little too good.

Yes, but you only have to remember once. Anyway, of course that is not the answer.

James: I am not sure if you are on to the correct answer or not, but I will say this:
the way the food tasted is relevant.

Here's another hint to get things moving in the right direction:
the man uses a cane.

Quetzycoatl,

Your hint suggests that my answer is not correct. So I'll post it for everyone else's enjoyment:

The man has been the owner and master chef at a small-town restaurant for many years, and has been moderately successful. This new restaurant opens up, and one by one his regulars stop coming. Eventually he decides to see what the competition is offering. After tasting the food there, he realizes that he and his restaurant have no chance. Insert sob story here that makes him so depressed he commits suicide.

So there's no reason why he would have to have a cane (unless you're just suggesting that he's old).

James and Tenali,
Though I like both your answers they are both quite far from the one I have in mind. The fact that he uses a cane is significant (insofar as it is a clue to something about the man).

Okay here are some clues:

There man uses a cane.

There is nothing wrong with his legs.

He had never tasted the kind of food that he had at the restraunt before.

The man is a veteran of war.

Quetzy,
Does the name of the food have any relevance with the answer?
I feel that guilt feeling is prolly the reason behind his actions,am i right in this thinking?

It is not so much the name as the type. You are correct about guilt.

It's a bit desperate, but I'm guessing something like...
::
During war, the man and his comrades became stranded in some hostile and remote location. Unfortunately only a couple of them survived and to add to the problems, the man lost his sight due to some type of explosion. So as not to cause extra trauma, his friends told him that the others have gone for help. As supplies ran out, they became desperate for food. Finally they turned to the dead corpses. However, they felt it more sensitive not to let the blind man know, so they told him they were feeding him some type of rare bird. Eventually they were rescued and he was never told what they did to keep themselves alive.

Many years later he heard that his local restaurant was putting some rare game on the menu, and in particular was the bird that kept him alive during the war time. For old times sake he had to sample that life-giving food.

When he tasted the bird he knew at once that what he had been fed in the war was NOT this bird. Suddenly half-heard conversations ran back into his mind, and he realised what had happended. The utter horror of it all drove him to kill himself.

I know what you mean. So many of these lateral problems revolve around some morbid event.

I believe it was pork, according to the surviving members of the last african tribe that practised cannibalism that are old enough to have tasted it..
Of course we could always ask that german fellow, he has some more recent experience..

I've heard of one similar version of this story.

The man is a soldier so he lost his sight during a sea warfare.

One of his friends left alive with him on a tiny boat while all their other teammates are dead during the battle.

Soon they ran out of food and almost starved to death.

Suddenly his friend told him that a seagull fell on the boat.

So the shared the "flesh"......

Thanks to the seagull which lengthened their life, the blind man was rescued by some passing boats but his friend, unfortunately, cannot hold that long and was dead on the boat......

What happened next is just like what Sir Col said  Shocked

Okay, I just tuned in, and had an answer all worked out until I read the correct (accepted) answers offered. But, never one to stand on ceremony.

The man walked with a cane because he was a blind restauranteur who was having trouble financially. Usually, he was accompanied by a seeing eye dog. But, the dog, which he loved to the extreme, had recently been stolen. He had heard about a dog-napping ring that worked out of this restaurant, so he decided to investigate. Well, he took one taste and realized where his fine four-footed friend had gone and was filled with a sadness so unbearable he knew he could not continue working as a chef at his restaurant and it drove him to suicide.

Of course he knew what dog meat tasted like because he lost his sight during the war and along with his companions, who were stranded on a boat until they found an island to be stranded on, were forced to eat all manner of things, including seagulls and rare tropical birds, pork, longpork, and dog.
