Robbery-of the Home Invasion Kind
« on: Sep 29th, 2003, 7:11am »

Jason is at home.
A robber enters and sees Jason
Jason sees the robber.
The robber takes everything of value.
The next day, Jason does not call the police even though everything was stolen.

Question : Why ?

I'd say::
Either he was home at a baseball game at the home plate, and the runner stole (stole a base) everything of value that was at home, the only thing of value, a point in the game.
OR
Jason and the robber are both robbers and the robber had to hide everything they stole together.

Maybe Jason is a dog / cat / gold fish ...

Or, nitpicking, he didn't call the next day because he called on the day of the robbery

Or maybe Jason couldn't call the police the next day, because he was already dead by then.
I favour BNC's first answer, though.

All good guesses but guess again.
Jason is indeed a person, and there is a reason why it mentions calling the police the next day.

Maybe there wasn't anything in the first place (which makes it very easy to take everything)

oh wait the phone was stolen along with everything else. So why not use a pay-phone? Well, he doesn't have any money, nor any clothes, nor proof of his identity, and his neighbours either never liked him, or they don't even know who the crazy naked rambling wreck of guy is, and run away when they see him, so he can forget getting a quarter out of them.

Jason is the mass murderer made famous by all those movies.

The robber looks exactly like Jason's father or mother (either by chance or design). Because Jason was abused terribly by his parents he is emotionally incapable of doing anything due to ths shock of seeing his childhood tormentor. His pyschosis is extremely severe causing him to enter a state of catatonia lasting for at least a day. But, just to cover all my bases, as a mass murderer, Jason would rather avoid contacting the police.

:The thief saw Jason, but thought Jason was sleeping and quietly looted the place. Actually Jason saw the burgular, but pretended to be asleep for his own safety (as is usually recommended should this occur). Jason did not call the police because everything stolen from him was illegal (drugs, weapons, stolen property, ...).:

Jason is an instructor at a school for cat burglars, like in Oliver Twist. He stands by grading the student thief, who passes with flying colors by making off with everything. Rather than calling the police, Jason calls the young artful dodger to congratulate him on his excellent performance.

No, the thief knew Jason was awake, but he was still quiet while ransacking the house. Hmm, what's the purpose in that? And there were no stolen goods in the house.

Don't tell me Jason is:

Yeah, I thought about it before.  Smiley
The thing that confused me (actualy, I still don't get it) was your hint that "the next day" was important. Why? Would Jason call the police in a few years?

"The next day" was put in the riddle as a hint, to help you realize that someone else had to be there to discover everything was missing.

Even if the answer has been given, I'd say that ::The robber knew that he had been spotted, so he killed Jason and then stole as his stuff. Therefore, Jason didn't call the police because he was dead!::   Tongue

Maybe someone that has dealt so many times with the police, they couldn't be bothered any more with them; afterall if they've let you down before, they can do it again.

Maybe Jason didn't know the man entering was a robber and thought he was the removal man. The reason he didn't call the police the next day is because he was travelling overseas and he would expect it take several weeks for his things to arrive anyway.

OR

Jason thought he was coming to read the electicity/gas meter and whilst Jason wasn't looking, the man stole Jason's "Everything of Value" CD, by the Shadows.  Grin

What I was thinking was, the burglar left at 11:59:59 pm, so when Jason reported to the police, it was already the next day. : Wink

Jason sees the robber.
The robber takes everything of value.
The next day, Jason does not call the police even though everything was stolen.

Question : Why ?

Jason is a robot.
Jason is valuable.
Jason was also stolen.
Maybe Jason is a security system, with cameras recording what is happening.

Or maybe Jason is a policeman, or private investigator, and so does not need to contact the police because he can take up the case himself. The reason he didn't act when being burgled was because the robber had too much of an advantage (holding a gun, or similar), and so could not apprehend him at that point.

OK, that's stretching a little bit, but it could work...

I got another idea:
Jason is in prison.  Would a prisonner call the police to inform them that the prison was robbed?
