tricky inheritance

A man died and left half his horses to his first son, 1/6 to his 2nd, and 1/9 to his 3rd. There were 17 horses and could not be evenly divided. Their uncle pete came to them to help them solve the puzzle. within 30 seconds after pete arived they solved it. How did they solve the problem?
