A petshop owner had a parrot with a sign on its cage that said "Parrot repeats everything it hears". Davey bought the parrot and for two weeks he spoke to it and it didn't say a word. He returned the parrot but the shopkeeper said he never lied about the parrot. How can this be?

The problem statement says: on May 30th, 2003, 4:11pm, maryl wrote:Davey bought the parrot and for two weeks he spoke to it and it didn't say a word. |
| Maybe they're both deaf? I wonder whether this is really supposed to be in the "what happened" forum.

He was suggesting that, if the parrot repeats what it hears and was deaf, it would repeat nothing. Alternatively, as the parrot repeats EVERYTHING it hears, it must have heard a lot of silence in its lifetime. Maybe Davey wasn't around when it got around to saying what it heard Davey say?

| Sorry! The flatness of the medium on which we post suffers our attempts at irony. Of course, if I were better acquainted with the regulars on the board I might have expected as much.

| The shopkeeper said, "Was there anything resembling `immediately', or `within two weeks' on the sign? No? Do you know how long these parrots live? So there."

I like your answer, Leonid. The shopkeeper could also ask Davey whether he didn't sleep for two whole weeks. Otherwise the parrot could have repeated everything while Davey was asleep.

Could the shopkeeper and owner be two serarate people? By definition, a shopkeeper can be the owner or a manager entrusted to 'keep' or look after a shop. If this were the case then the owner could have unwittingly or deviously sold the parrot under the pretext that it could repeat everything it heard where in fact the reverse could be true. The shopkeeper/manager not having been implicated before can truthfully say that he had'nt lied.

Yes, the parrot repeats everything it hears. But it hasn't heard everthing yet, so it didn't start repeating it.

perhaps the parrot just kept repeating "everything it hears." Oh wait, that wouldn't work if it didn't say anything at all... Is the riddle worded the right way?

There is nothing wrong with the wording. Wowbagger solved it in the 1st reply.

Well... what if you were to think outside the box... Like if the shop keeper literally meant that the parrot only said "Everything it hears." And Davey didn't hear the parrot say "A word" because it only says "everything it hears." Would that kinda work if you think about it

In my humble opinion, the shopkeeper didn't lie, or anything. The parrot isn't deaf. What is in fact happening, is that while you're asleep, he flies to the shopkeeper, tells him everything you have said, and flies back before you wakeup. Then, when you go to the shopkeeper to complain, he'll blackmail you into paying even more ...

| Not all parrots can speak. It's only certain kinds of parrots I think. And it's something they need to learn, probably from a young age. You'd probably have to ask whoever you bought it from.
