Why is George Washington's official birthday celebration held on February 22 when he was actually born on February 11?

Sloppy handwriting on his birth-certificate, followed by years of bureaucratic inertia? A practical joke gone horribly, horribly wrong? Because Washington celebrated his birthday 2 or 3 times a month to score extra presents? (Martha, I can not tell a lie...it is so my birthday again today.) ...or it could be the whole Julian calendar / Gregorian calendar thing. 1752 was such a magical year. Cheers, PP
