I searched for this riddle, but didn't find it: A boy and his father get into a terrible car accident; his father dies. When the boy goes in for surgery, the surgeon refuses to operate on him. Why?

Easy, the boy was covered by his dad's medical insurance, which no longer applies due to his dad's death, and the surgeon didn''t want to get stiffed. (Of course, I'm kidding. I don't mean to disparage anyone with this glib remark.)

In this riddle the surgon's reply, with the reason for the refusal of operation, is usually given. The riddle then becomes: how can that be.

Maybe these days it does. Feminists use to love this as an example of fallocentric society.

The version I've heard of this is "A father and a son are in a horrific car accident where the father is killed and when the son goes to the hopsital the surgeon refuses to operate. The surgeon's reason is 'I cannot opperate, for he his my son.'" How is this so? (i have bad memory so excuse me if this is completely incorrect and i'm way off topic)

It's a old riddle (and an old thread), but if you look up "phallocentric" you'll probably figure it out. Otherwise, if you look up the surgeons scrubs you might get a surprise

I'm glad I'm not the only pedant to be confused by "fallocentric". Unreconstructed feminist I may be, but even I have yet to complain at men inserting their falluses into conversations (or do I mean falli?) Or would that be a fallacy?? I think I need to go have another coffee.

"A father and a son are in a horrific car accident where the father is killed and when the son goes to the hopsital the surgeon refuses to operate. The surgeon's reason is 'I cannot opperate, for he his my son." How is this so? Well cause... hidden: | the surgeon is his mom. Right |

You are right Cristal. This is an old one and when people heard doctor they automatically think is must be a man. But in fact the Doctor was his mom.

Here is another solution: The doctor is the boy's brother/sister and since the boy caused the crash, they had no intension of helping him, feeling very bitter towards him. Another technicality is that, in England anyway, I'm fairly sure that a surgeon is not allowed to opperate on someone with whom he, or she, has connections with. Therefor, even if the mother HAD wanted to perform the operation she wouldn't be allowed as her judgment could be clouded. However, this raises the question: why wouldn't she try to save her son?

This riddle is supposed to say, "the surgeon said "I cannot operate on this boy, he is my son"."
