Posts disappearing?

Some time ago I noticed that the 'Easy' forum counted exactly 15,000 posts. This soon increased to 15,002 and 15,003, but then the count started dropping.

Now the count stops at well less 15,000 posts...

Do posts disappear, or has the counter gone astray?

solving abstract problems is like sex: it may occasionally have some practical use, but that is not why we do it.

xy - y = x5 - y4 - y3 = 20; x>0, y>0.

Interesting. I've never paid attention to the post counts. It may be that some posts are being deleted. I had to delete a thread the other day when I discovered that the originator had removed all of his comments, which left the rest of the thread disconnected and making no sense. And I regularly delete "Moved:" notices after a few weeks (once I am sure the originator has seen that the thread has been moved and not just deleted). But in all this would only account for a small number of posts, and new posts are being added all the time.

Thud & Blunder had a problem with disappearing posts some time back that was never explained. It may be that the same thing is happening again, but in the old threads that no one looks at anymore. Or it may be that YaBB is auto-deleting old threads to make room for new. I would hate to think that is true, but since the attachments directory has filled up, maybe some others have as well.
