[ FAQ : how to hide text? ]

UPDATED: 5:52 PM 3/25/2005 Want to give a solution or hint, but don't want others to see it unless they highlight the area with a mouse? Embrace the secret text in hide tags as follows: Code: [hide] i send this in order to have your advice [/hide] |
| The resulting text will appear as: i send this in order to have your advice You have to highlight this area with your mouse to see the hidden message. There is also a convenient hide-button at the far right of the second row of the YABBC tags menu, in case you forget the command. notes: hide tags now work in previewing as well. the old implementation wasn't right.

A few other FAQs about hidden text, as currently implemented: How can I see it? - Select the text area using your mouse cursor. While the area is selected, the text will show. Why? - Posters hide information because many people turn to the forum when they are stuck and want a push in the right direction, but not the full solution. Hiding text gives the reader a chance to reveal only some of the information, in hopes that they can figure out the rest themselves. It's not working! - Hidden text is only hidden in the regular thread display. Anywhere else, it will show. In particular, hidden text is not hidden in the Preview pane. Fear not! If you have attempted to hide some text, and in the preview you can see the text, but not the hide tags, then you are okay. When you post the text will be hidden. But, if you can see the hide tags in the Preview pane - you have an error you need to correct. (I decided to post this here so that I could link newbies to it, rather than keep repeating it all over the forum.)

THUDandBLUNDER brought it to my attention that hyperlinks don't hide normally. To hide a hyperlink, along with regular text, you'll have to do this: [hide] hidden text before hyperlink, [/hide] [url=linktosomewhere] [hide] link-text [/hide][/url][hide], hidden text after hyperlink[/hide] normal:" hidden text before hyperlink, link-text, hidden text after hyperlink" as above:" hidden text before hyperlink, link-text, hidden text after hyperlink"

| Beware: I just want to confirm that and give an example. When you see the "10 most recent posts " hidden text are revealed. So beware, if you don't want to read fortuitously solutions.

For some reason, now you can see the hide tags in preview mode, even when they're put in correctly.

Tower's solution for hiding link text gave me an idea for hiding text even in preview mode. It goes something like this [url=Not a real url, just hidden text] [/url] Find (and read) the hidden text.

stuff Well, the above hide tags are showing in preview, so if they're hidden in my post, I've put them in right. Wait a minute. *checks preferences* No, nothing to do with that either. This is weird.

Weird indeed. All I can think of is that it must have something to do with your browser. Cho - I suppose that works, but you might want to indicate to people to look at their url display to see the text, otherwise they won't notice that useful information is being displayed.

Hey, just joined, didn't know about the 'hide' and '/hide' routine. So simply used within sq brackets color=black and then /color. It worked. See: >This is hidden.< And it works in the pre-view panel too. ok?

Remember the colors alternate. A black color will work 50% of the times. Compare your: >This is hidden.< With the standard: ::This is really hidden:: The mail problem with the hide tags is that they're not working in the preview / last 10.

I don't understand: "Remember the colors alternate. A black color will work 50% of the times." You mean they keep changing the paper and ink colors periodically? But why? If they stick to the white on black ( a very comfortable arrangement, so easy on the eyes), my hidden text stays hidden in preview, in regular post and in the 'ten most recent posts' as well. OK, if alternating is their policy, then I will have to adopt the 'hide' and '/hide'commands.

The background colours of the posts on this board alternate between dark grey and black. Both may look black though, if you have your monitor on low contrast (like I have).

I believe mansi wants some way of preventing others from seeing the answer until he allows them to. But the point behind hiding text is that we don't want to prevent others from having the satisfaction of solving the riddle, by presenting the answer to them before they are ready for it. This is particularly true for first replies, as later people reading the riddle will see the answer sitting right there before they even get the chance to think about the riddle themselves. We hide answers in later replies so that those who are only looking for a push in the right direction can read some of the thread without finding the answer given in the middle. I do not feel it is appropriate for this forum to deny the answer to someone who wants it until they perform some specified action (other than perhaps the action of solving the riddle themselves). So even if this is possible, I don't think it is desirable.

You could always use the [invisible] [/invisible] tag which not only hides the text but it also hides the poster. For an example of this you can see the complete solution I posted near the beginning of the 100 prisoners & a light bulb thread.

And also my reply in which I pointed out that Sir Col's solution wouldn't work, as clouds of flatulence would disappate over 100+ days.
