If we would like to index the entire earth population, how long should the index size be? -This question was asked in someone's interview.

You can only believe i what you can prove, and since you have nothing proven to cmpare to, you can believe in nothing.
I have ~50 posts to hack a "R" into a "D". Which one?

The population is about 6 billion = 6x(1000)3 < 8x230 = (28)5, so 5 bytes ought to be sufficient.

No, I think 6 billion is much closer to the number of people in the world than 65 million.

Not yet. That one is 650 million. Count the number of places the decimal point has moved.

It all depends what is the key to your index. To actually identify a person worldwide you would probably have to store all the names and birth dates, probably also the parent's names, for identification purposes. So count at least 100 bytes per entry.

You misplaced the 4 again? Dear, can't you be careful with these things? When you find it, please return it between the 3 and the 5 where it belongs, so we can all use it when necessary.
