I Got Slashed By A Laser Beam

I have a wand which fires a laser beam. The laser beam produced has a thickness of x millimeters, and has an intensity strong enough such that if I fire the beam at a human body, the beam will come out the other side of the body. With activated wand in hand, I now sweep the laser beam across your waist, Jedi-style. What happens? Do you get sawed in half? (certain details are purposely not given; you can give conditions necessary for various things to happen or not happen)

No. My hand has already been cut off (Jedi-style) and replaced by a robotic hand (Jedi-style). Its metallic wrist deflects the beam (Jedi-style) back onto you, cutting you in half (Jedi-style).

What frequency of light is the laser? I suppose if it goes through my body de wavelength will be less than half a meter.. Doesn't narrow it down much though. Most light in that region still won't do any damage, so not much would happen.. Also what would happen is that I'd probably get annoyed at the wooshing sound you produce while emulating 'jedi-style'..

Actually, the longer wavelengths can be said to go through body - in that they arrive at the other side essentially unchanged - and with you unchanged as well.

Reminds me of lightning striking somebody, it won't saw you in half, just fry your insides; and also an x-ray; doesn't it depend on what kind of beam it is.

yep, it will.. A large part of the spectrum will get through your body at very low intensities and wouldn't cause much harm even at large intensities.. Besides, a 'visible light' laser would burn, more than saw, through tissue..

If you were in fact to shine a laser inside your mouth and out through your cheeck you would in fact see the light (if you looked in the mirror). The light would go through your skin, but not harm you. In theory, if there was a light strong enough to go through your waist and come out the other side it wouldn't nessecarlily harm you, because if you shine a laser pointer on your finger, your finger lives. However, the question comes to the point that if the laser was in fact hot because of its brightness. Then one comes to the question, is light a wave or a particle. Furthermore, this question is quite fun, yet haphazard. However the title says I got slashed by a laser beam, which, slash, by definition is "To make a gash or gashes in...To cut a slit or slits in" (dictionary.com). This in turn implies that you were in fact cut in half.

hmmm....the reference to star wars...if you watch the movie and read the books, the laser thats emitted is so hot that it WILL go through you and "cut" you in half, but as it does that, since it's so hot,it will quaterize the wound and therefore, you were cut but instantly back together again.this is why in the movie theres no blood.

Hmm, a new user resurrecting a four-and-a-half-year-old thread to add a comment of marginal relevance with a link to a commercial website. If it's spam, it's sure not very effective. --SMQ

really guys? i mean the light sword FIRES laser beams not a continious controlled light that is controlled by hollywood if he slice him jedi stlyle he would get a bruise unless he fired while he was sliceing which is also unlikley because it would just shoot behind him trying to make that make sense but in my mind it does..

In reality most lasers are not going to cut anything thicker than an inch or so due to beam divergence.

By definition the laser is a device that amplifies light by means of stimulated emission of radiation. In other words, the laser is a generator and amplifier of radiation in the form of light. To help understand how the laser beam is produced, let's begin by looking at how light is created at the atomic level.

| Well, you're wrong (and probably trying to spam). Under 5mW is fairly safe, because the blink reflex will limit how much light can get in they eye if you're stupid enough to aim it at anyone's eyes (your own included). But higher than that you'll start frying the retina. 5ms at 100mW is enough to do damage, if I read wikipedia correctly.
