Elemental math

I apologize if this has been posted before, I searched for a bunch of things and didn't find this riddle anywhere. I got it from a professor in a math for elementary students class. It took me a couple days to figure it out, but I'm slow. I was the only one who figured it out, though. It works best as an oral riddle, but this being the internet I'll do the best I can. "If five minus four equals iron, what does six minus nine equal?" The answer is not -3.

Heh.. clever.. And the answer is even in the same group as the example. Two others: six minus ten nil minus fifty
