Isn't this "guess what I'm thinking" type of puzzle (citing Icarus)?

Yes, it is. But there is no telepathy forum, so I put it in the "medium" forum. OK, a hint: You can get only number 1 to 6.

I've tried graphing and looking at the coordinates (sums, distance from zero) to see if they are the answer. I've tried graphing and looking at the possible shape combinations (NE can be N then E or NE, for example). I'm stumped.

There are only 4 cardinal directions. NESW is N, E, S, W. Yeah... It really seems to be a boring "guess what I think" riddle. But it is a very simple idea. So simple that I don't see any hint that doesn't give it away. Come on, what can give you a number from 1 to 6? Tomorrow, a real hint.

I see it now! I don't realize that hidden: | it was limited to 1-6- knowing that its a six sided die. It also helps to know that NE can't be the direction northeast | .

You are almost there, but... there is an additional condition that is implied and your solution doesn't meet.

| Just because I don't enjoy them as much does not mean I think they have no place here. (I don't think they belong in the hard section, where so many newbies like to place them, but Grimbal has not committed this grevious error. While I might not agree that this one is truly medium, the definitions are lax enough that I am willing to let it stand.) Grimbal, is your additional condition that the die start with 1 up, and with 2 to the north?

The additional condition is: Return to the starting position.
