Have you posted a chess puzzle with a similar solution sometime before T&B? This one looks pretty familiar.

If you are asking me Ulkesh...
I didn't post one with a en passant solution.
However, if you notice, it can be easy to find a solution when you KNOW all the pieces on the board are needed to solve the problem.  So how can a pawn be used.
Even if this is not true all the time, all chess puzzles can only use so many tricks.  You just have to remember all of them to make things easier:
Castling, pawning, en passant, white playing down the board, black or white MUST have moved last therefore it's black's or white's turn, etc...

T&B - I could guess at what you mean by that...but I prefer to simply ask you.  What do you mean?

You omitted a comma before 'T&B' and got Lightboxes all confused!  Cheesy
The one I think you mean had a Black rook and bishop against a White bishop, and one had to find where the hidden White king must be hiding.

While a reply of 'en passant' may indicate what you are doing (passing through?), it doesn't answer the question - which was 'What were White's last two moves?'  Have you quit?  Shocked    Roll Eyes

I know I know...but I didn't want to give the full answer because I do believe that most of the people of this forum would not get en passant because they are not obssessed with these RA as I am...but if you insist, lol.  Actually, good point.  I do need to work on posting my analysis to the problem so others can learn from my wisdom, LOL!
::Working on my own chess RA puzzles I quickly realized that if there is a previous move (a king) that moves backward and into check, then the other color has to move in such a way to undo the check.  Unfortunetly, this one shows that white has double checks in most positions where white cannot use one of the check"ers" to keep the other check"er" from checking.  i.e. a knight and rook check a king, then the knight moves to block the rook and at the same time undo the check the knight was causing on a king.  White's last move was from f5 because the black pawn can keep the bishop and queen from checking with an en passant, which brings back a white pawn to g4.  So white's last two moves were g2 - g4, then black does en passant.  Then white goes to e5.

I think the literal translation would be "in passing" or "while passing".

I don't get it....
If the last move was indeed f5-e5, then the king was in double check. I don't see how any pawn could have helped there.

help?  Huh

[edit]I take that back. Ofcourse, knowing what En Passant is may help...  Wink [/edit]

Set up a board with the position of the problem, but the White king on f5 and the Black pawn on f4, plus a White pawn on g2. Now White is in (single) check and plays g2-g4, which Black counters with f4xg4e.p.++.

For those who don't know "en passant": http://www.chessvariants.com/d.chess/enpassant.html.

Actually, two pawns are involved. See http://www.conservativebookstore.com/chess/enpass.htm

I think something is wrong with my solution.  Back to work on it.
My inteaded solution did not input a very much, needed, knight
::located at g4 then moves to e5 calling check with the bishop to the king (the king at f5).  White blocks the check with a pawn moving up from g2 - g4.  Then en passant.  White is now in check again! by the bishop.  Then the king kills the knight on his left at e5.
