It's a birthday cake with a ring of candles haphazardly put on it, sitting on a square platter, with a square piece cut out of the middle.

It's the top view of a square table, with a pumpkin on top of it, the pumpkin has had a square cut made in the top of it and the top taken off so that the "guts" could be removed.

I’ll give it a try:

It looks somewhat like a Silicon chip (square in the middle) in its housing (circle) before wire-bonding to the pins. The pins are the dots circling the chip. The outer square may be just a frame, or the stage on which the wire bonding takes place.
I thought of it because I’m now writing an exam in a course called “Analog circuits”. The book I using now is called “microelectronic circuits” by Sedra and Smith (see http://www.sedrasmith.org/), and the picture seems very very similar.

It may also be an answer to http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~wwu/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=riddles_med ium;action=display;num=1041509671

It is round and square: the chip is square, the housing square (a bit lame…)
Very small: yes, the chip Is small
Made of something: Silicon
Not what it seems: The chip is hidden in the housing.

two squares, a circle, and some badly positioned dots.

Actually, I thought it was a bacterial culture, with like, a cube of a resistance drug in the middle or something. I don't know - it's a little too scientific though..

What about: eye candy for the chronically bored?
