three way pistol duel
« on: Jul 14th, 2007, 7:16am »

The answer is to miss if i am not mistaken on purpose. Then the 50% robot will take a shot at the 100%, he will do so because if he doesn't kill him he, is dead due to him being the better marksmen. The next robot assuming he is not dead will wipe out the 50% robot leaving you alive. with a 50% chance of killing him. If the 50% robot does kill on his first shot, then you still have the same odds, but they slightly increase asuming that these robots will be acurate in the precision (i mean that if a robot kills in every 1/2 shots, and doesn't kill on the first, he does on the second.) If this does occur, you will either miss and score the next bulllet, therefore winning the duel. just want confirmation if i am correct.

This is not normally assumed. Probability doesn't work like that.

Casinos wouldn't exist if you knew that 1/2 probability meant that an event had to occur after 2 trials.  Tongue

Good call, no I'm just asuming this as they are robots, made for a purpose. So if they were made to miss 1 and then hit the next, this would always occur, not that they would miss 2, and then hit the next 2.

Well, from my understanding, there are various methods of getting a computer to output a random number at present, so it would be hardly a stretch to result in an even number = hit, odd number = miss...

yes true, but i know where i am coming from in my understanding that to have the optimal chance of survival, the best option is to deliberatley miss. I have read the other long discussion over the question, and the only conclusion that seems to be a constant is to miss first shot on purpose.

That still does not mean you solved the puzzle.

You might have gotten the right answer, but if the reasoning is wrong, then you haven't solved the puzzle.

Can you even miss intentionally? What if you try to miss and you miss missing, what do you hit?

If it is the end of the discussion, I shall say something irrelevant and not even wrong. 1+1=fish=ghoti-2

fish=ghotio, not ghoti. No more BS is required here.

I disagree, since it is phonetic, I think the sound is made by tio not ti. Either way, BS is not required. Also, by Murphy's Law, he had to get something right eventually.

I disagree with your disagreement: if you were right then "nation" would end like "schnauzer" starts; but there's clearly a vowel between the "sh" and the "n" at the end of "nation" that's not present between the "sh" and "n" of "schnauzer".

But then it would sound like fisho, not fish.

Read the link that you so kindly gave. I answered before I read. So what do you make of it then. I still believe I am correct.

That's rather the point, each of the phonetic sounds in fish can be represented in many ways, the 'sh' being a prime example.

'tio' (as in nation) is however not one of the 11 options for the last phoneme. Because the o isn't silent. 'tio' constitutes two phonemes /sh/ and /oh/.

Well, with my accent, the 'o' is silent. When I say it aloud, I can't hear it, neither can my dad. I say it as though the last 'n' is just as 'en' not 'on'.

Hmmm, Not good by the disagreements sake, but I still think I'm correct.  Tongue

I knew something irrelevant would lead to conversation on an intelligent topic. Now back to the three way pistol duel. Shoot c!

The right answer is still to shoot at nothing, like it's always been.
The irrelevant discussion adds at least as much to the thread as regurgitating your irrational preference for shooting C. The maths is extremely simple, it's spelled out in the other thread, so why ignore it?
