Seeing the 12 balls riddle pop up here reminds me of this variant:
 
You have 5 red balls and 1 green one.  All the red balls weigh the same as the green one except one of the red ones weighs 1 gram more, and perhaps one of the red ones weighs 1 gram less.
 
In three weighings on a standard two-bowl balance scale, can you find which red ball is heavy and which - if any - is light?
