Mathematician's wife shakes hands
« on: Mar 20th, 2003, 9:35am »

Hi all,
First of all, great thanks to Wu for his excellent site (the best).
And forgive me for my bad English.

I have searched if the riddle that I propose you was already on the site or the forum, I didn't find it, so I post it.
Please forget this if you already know this riddle...
Every one can reformulate correctly the riddle, If he understand it.

Mathematician's wife shakes hands:
A mathematician with his wife are in a reception for the evening.
In the room where the reception take place there is 50 couples (mathematician and his wife counted).
At the end of the reception, he asks everybody, his wife including (so ask 99 persons) :
- with how many different person have you shake hands this evening ?
He's very amazed because all the responses he have are differents.
Given that no one shake the hand of his partner or his own hand:

the question is :
- How many hands have been shaken by mathematician's wife ?

note: we don't know how many hands the mathematician himself has shaken.

I think the reason your search may not have found the riddle is that you need to set the time field to search back a while.  The standard search only goes back one week.  Here is the previous thread which is essentially the same:

Thanks for the post though, glad to have you here.

Oh, and could someone tell me how to post a link so that by clicking on, say the word "link" it takes you to the site?

Yes, I can.

Instead of writing [ url ] <the_url> [ /url ] ,
you write [ url=<the_url> ] link [ /url ] (without the spaces around the brackets of course).
That should do the trick.
